In fairness, this has been the entire classics/generation line has been like this from the start. Optimus, Megatron, Perceptor, Wreck-Gar, Kup, Blurr, Scourge ... all of these characters were redone with a new alt. mode. G1 accuracy has been the exception, not the norm.
Glass half full: they chose the G1 accurate Rodimus over the only other choice: the Energon version.
edit: I've broken out my old Energon and Titanium Rodimii. Man oh man, I forgot some of the headaches with this guy. I remembered the huge gap in the middle, but forgot his spoiler is actually quite far away form his back in robot mode. I also forgot how terrible the ratchets were on this. There's stick straight and awkward with nothing in between! And, while the arms are the right length, the elbow is right at the shoulder.
I still think E.Rodimus would have been worse, though. At least you can forget all of T.Roddy's issues when you have him standing still in your collection. E.Roddy is just a mass of awkwardness bundled in a terrible gimmick. And he also has his elbows at his shoulders (I guess it was that kinda decade for Rodimus).
Also, as nice as the art is, I would have appreciated it if they would have used the interior toy's likeness. Although it would still have ended up being recycled.
