Same here. Around the end to the beginning of a year however is a good time to get Platinum sets though, since most retailers are trying to get rid of them, and they usually go on a big sale. The less people buy them, the more they go on sale. I wish I could've afforded that YotG Soundwave early this year since he went on sale on ToysRUs for only 100 USD.

That was never said by hasbro. This is probably just a reissue of the same toy with a different paint job.

Doesnt mean I am getting this set, mind you. I wonder what the fandom would have done if they used his Energon Rodimus Major figure?

I think Titanium Rodimus is just okay. It was great for the Titanium line, but that means, like all Titanium figures, it's a mixed bag. The overall look is decent enough, but the proportions leave a lot to be desired and you still have that weird gap in the middle.

Energon Rodimus is far worse, though. Especially divorced from the rest of the Energon line. His alt. mode could be considered better from a certain point of view, but the robot mode's proportions and articulation are just murdered by it's gimmick and wind up worse than Titanium Rodimus' IMO. I don't think anyone would have been happy with Hasbro using the Energon mould.

I actually have Titanium Rodimus, but he's been put into a box since he's been replaced by Fansproject's Protector. I'm inspired to take both him and Superlink Galvatron out just to mess around with.

Also, I think the original Titanium paintjob is so much better than what we have here, and that goes for Hot Rod's and Wreck Gar's "platinum" paintjobs too. It's ironic, but their releases actually look like cheaper versions of their original releases more than anything close to premiums.

I kinda want that Rodimus, sorta, I think? Only because it's the closest thing to a decently scaled official Classics Rodimus Prime we have right now.

Galvatron.... meh. Already have the original use, and I actually plan on getting rid of that once the Titans Return Voyager lands, so to get this guy would be a serious disservice.

I will say, dat packaging tho! :x

They did give Cyclonus a new weapon. And a new left hand with a port in it that the original version lacked. And gave the one Sweep a new head (that's totally not the BotCon Devcon, I swear!). In saying that, if this guy actually retains the diecast, I'll be surprised.

2 things though

1. Diecast isnt expensive in the least, look at hotwheels cars. And they kept the diecast for all the other platinum sets.
2. The Cyclonus weapon isnt new. It's generations Kup's rifle.

All of your other points stand though.

I really think they retained the diecast. Look at the red in the shoulders and wist (plastic) compared to the chest and legs (diecast).

I mean it's entirely possible they just happened to cast those diecast parts in metallic red plastic or used metallic red paint just on them. But I think it's more likely that they remained diecast.

You may not know this, but the materials the mold is made of determine whether it can be used with plastic and/or metal, due to melting points. Die-cast metal molds (like those for the Titanium Series) can be used to cast plastic pieces, but I don't know how that will work out for Roddy here, joint-wise.

What I'm saying is that it's the diecast that was the big problem with Rodimus; from what I know, the diecast made him unstable and floppy.

Probably should've said "new to the mold"; I know it's Kup's rifle, I just wrote it in a way that was totes dumb. Error on my part!

I have been into transformers since 1984.
While I love G1 I also love new innovations and takes on the characters.
I prefer official Hasbro releases of stuff for the most part
I'm not a huge fan of Japanese original Transformers media or designs.
It's easier for me to say which are my LEAST favorite toy lines: Beast Machines, Robots in Disguise.

Would it take more money to ditch the diecast molds and to remake plastic molds, or to just keep the diecast in? :-?

Actually, Rodimus was one of the more stable ones, and his joints were not loose. At least not on mine. His hips were pretty tight. I think you are confusing him with G.I. Joe Megatron, or WWI Optimus. They were loose.

Rodimus surprisingly did not suffer from most of the issues that plagued the rest of the line.

Things like Diaperwave, G.I Joe Megs. WWI Jetfire, and Prime those had loose joint issues and design issues, and very bad use of diecast.

Rodimus was quite the opposite in that regard. His major flaw was the hollow chest. With his narrow waist coming in second. Beyond that he was perfectly serviceable.

Galvatron being a tank in the set is an unfortunate consequence of decisions made back in 2007. The Universe 2008 line (that the figure is from) was mostly about realistic vehicles, and Galvatron was no exception. That was bad decision #1.
Bad decision #2 was to downsize the toy, from the intended Voyager Class to Deluxe Class. The original plan was to make him a Triple Changer, from Robot, to Tank to Cannon Platform, but the downsizing forced the last one to be excised, with only a few parts remaining (like the "feet" in the forward treads).

Finally bad decision #3 was to only use pre-existing molds for the Platinum Line. Then again, using the current TR Galvatron will have people complaining "Where in the Movie is Galvatron a Headmaster!". Hasbro just can't win...

I picked up the Universe Galvatron. It really should have been a voyager size or even Leader. As a deluxe, the design was brilliant, but so fiddly at such a small size that it was like the Rubik's Cube of deluxes....

In fairness, this has been the entire classics/generation line has been like this from the start. Optimus, Megatron, Perceptor, Wreck-Gar, Kup, Blurr, Scourge ... all of these characters were redone with a new alt. mode. G1 accuracy has been the exception, not the norm.

Glass half full: they chose the G1 accurate Rodimus over the only other choice: the Energon version.

edit: I've broken out my old Energon and Titanium Rodimii. Man oh man, I forgot some of the headaches with this guy. I remembered the huge gap in the middle, but forgot his spoiler is actually quite far away form his back in robot mode. I also forgot how terrible the ratchets were on this. There's stick straight and awkward with nothing in between! And, while the arms are the right length, the elbow is right at the shoulder.

I still think E.Rodimus would have been worse, though. At least you can forget all of T.Roddy's issues when you have him standing still in your collection. E.Roddy is just a mass of awkwardness bundled in a terrible gimmick. And he also has his elbows at his shoulders (I guess it was that kinda decade for Rodimus).

Also, as nice as the art is, I would have appreciated it if they would have used the interior toy's likeness. Although it would still have ended up being recycled.

I'd like to see them reissue a few of the titanium figures but only if they were re done in plastic. They could have done the smaller energon galvatron in the set, he may be a jet but he looks a lot better.

But they have a G1 Galvatron in his actual alt mode coming out as well. On the anniversary no less, and its the first time since the G1 toy. I dont see how anyone loses. Hasbro has something for everyone this year.

And if you dont like that deco, there is another option.

Its the first time we are getting a Hasbro toy of Galvatron in his G1 alt mode in G1 colours, and its this year. So arent we lucky afterall?
