So close. Sony have handed in their financial results for the year ending March 31. You may remember, they launched the PS3 during that time, and even though it's cost them a f*ckton of cash, it's not doing so well. Think that's affected their bottom line? You bet it has.

While last year Sony Corp as a whole raked in 226.42 billion yen (USD$1.88 billion) in operating profits, this year, they could only scrape together 71.8 billion (USD$596 million). That's a drop-off of USD$1.28 billion dollars. Think that was because of the PS3? You bet it was.

The games biz lost a staggering $1.9 billion, so anyone who took a guess at that $2 billion loss, go get yourself a gold star.

I concur. Makes me wonder, will MGS4 and FFXIII be on the 360 this time next year... even though Sony is worth alot, they can't go on like this for too much longer.

Maybe Sony should try and make a version of the console that doesn't feature the whole blue ray thing. From what I heard that's what made the console so dang pricy.

Of course, axxing the cheaper version wasn't exactly a smart move either.

I smell price cuts and Multiplat galore thank god for 360's

If this means major price slashing, looks like I'm getting a PS3 too. I could always use another heater.

LOL Looks Like I'll play MGS 4 one way or another I've been a fan of this franchise for year and FFXII was my first and I enjoyed it but I was not going to pay $600 to play those games any maybe one other.

Well I know that Sony, to try and make up for some of this stuff is cutting out certain things from other PS3's that come off the line. The major one I know about is backwards compatibility.

im not surprised, the ps3 isnt exactly flying off the shelf where i work. i think we've still got at least one from the release day!

I have to admit, making a console that costs twice as much as the competition was not a smart move. Once the price drops we'll see some sales and maybe a little profit.

That's a bad move to me. One of the reasons I got my PS2, from the original release mind you, was for the backwards compatiblity. Like I said before, just take out the blue ray thing and it should be fine.

youd have a hard time taking the blu-ray out as thats how the games come. plus blu-ray is sonys format if they take it out then the format would die.

Well Blu-Ray just became less appealing from sony Because Panasonic just released a Blu-Ray Player for under $600.

Or you can just wait a year or two and you'll find these players at half of that price (or not at all, depending on the success).
I really see no point to buy a blue ray at the moment. Anyone care to enlighten this poor chap on why I wouldn't be able to live without one?

Sony got to big for it's britches and it cost them bigtime seriously did they think a 600 dollar system would appeal to their customers?

though this is true for alot of japanese gaming stuff, american/canadian games are slowly increasing and beating japanese games mainly due to the x box being so popular in the rest of the world (cept Japan) hopefully sony makes a comeback, id hate to see them go. Another thing they screwed up was the lack of a memory card port. you couldn't access old data unless you bought a special adapter to allow memory cards to be put in that was stupid.

Not to surprised Sony's got a loss. They were VERY cocky when they first showed off the PS3 and up to the release, and now they're getting they're come-upance. Still, it would take a lot to bring them down, and I don't want to rain on the Sony parade cause I know I've played my PS2 more overall than my Gamecube, and I loved the PS1 back in the day. I'm kinda hoping they bounce back.

But one mistake is I think Sony was banking on another PS2 with the whole Blue-Ray thing. One of, if not the reason that the Dreamcast didn't succeed was cause the PS2 had a built in DVD Player, and at that time it was cheaper than a DVD player in Japan. Plus, DVD was establishing itself as the new format with VHS proving to be getting outdated, and the PS2 I feel help usher the DVD into popularity in some areas.

Blu Ray though has not proven to be the new format, and it didn't even have time to grow before the PS3 came out, so there really wasn't that "incentive" to buy it cause the product available(movies) was extremely small.

Yes, actually, they did. I think it was Ken Kutaragi (Though I could be wrong) who said that they could sell the PS3 at any price they wanted, and people would still flock to them.

alot of people have said that the PS3 could be the next Dreamcast for the longest time I've been saying they could wind up being the next NEO GEO. Remember that one boys and girls.

The PS3's not a bad system. Let's compare:

Xbox 360 - $300 to $400 ($480 Elite, if you can find one), does not come with a standardized hard drive, no wi-fi, no high definition movie playback, overheats when more than 3 people are in the room, destroys game discs, top of the line graphics, best wireless controller ever (if you get the $400 or $480 version), every feature is an overpriced add-on, carny influenced points system for online purchases

PS3 - $600, 60 GB HD standard, wi-fi, hi def movies, overheats in enclosed areas, loses connectivity to controller when other Bluetooth devices present, top of the line graphics, no rumble (yet), gimmicky controller, actual dollar amounts for online purchases

Wii - $250, 500 mb flash memory (my cell phone has more internal storage), wi-fi (but no ethernet port?), gimmicky controller that doesn't detect motions, bad Gamecube ports, Gamecube graphics, no online play


To me, the Wii is the most overhyped and overpriced system out right now. It's a glorified Gamecube with a gimmicky control scheme.

As far as 360's go, everyone I know personnally has had to change their system out at least once this past year. Sometimes twice.

Oh and about Bluray, it's outselling HDDVD 7 to 1, but I'm sure that's coincidence.

Last note, for all you guys that are calling me a Sony fanboy right now, I own two of the consoles I just described, and neither of those is a PS3. I don't have a PS3. It's too expensive.

I dont know if your being sarcastic but you prove our point regardless of all its features, its too expensive, and all in all 99% of all people will get the PS3 for one reason, to play games. And right now, there are none. I agree with you on the Wii there not enough third party support and soon the novelty will wear off. I've had my 360 since September no problems yet.
