Comic Book Resources has posted an interesting bit of information regarding the Transformers on their website. Here's what they posted at
http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=13:
Rich Johnston at Comic Book Resources posted: |
"Transformers 2" is being prepped for 2009, as is a new cartoon series to spin off the upcoming movie.
The reason given to licensors as to why the robots look so different in the film is so that hardcore fans will stay loyal and keep buying the old toys, which they're relaunching, even if they hate the new movie.
Licensing has explicitly stated that companies doing merchandising have to avoid doing anything too similar to the original Transformers line, so as not to mix the two separate and profitable properties. |
This possibility has been discussed several times on Seibertron.com's forums in the past. It has been stated that a possible reason for the radical departure of the movie robots was to protect the look and designs of the classic Transformers characters. This could also be a way to make sure that there is no confusion regarding licensing during the times that Hasbro is not sharing profits with Paramount. It was revealed at BotCon 2006 that Hasbro would be sharing profits with Paramount for an unknown period of time surrounding the release of this summer's
Transformers Movie.
We will consider a lot of this as speculation until we hear something official from the powers-that-be at Hasbro.

Back in February we
reported that Tomy announced that the company cut its annual net profit forecast by two-thirds. Then we
reported that Tomy sold 14% of it shares to Texas Pacific Group. This put the company in great position for further growth. Now it looks like Tomy is ready to grow more. A report at
Toy News Magazine says that the company is looking to buy two Japanese rivals due to a declining domestic market. Read the full report at
Toy News Magazine.

It is only a matter of time before advertisements for the upcoming
Transformers Movie start to play on television. According to Imaginary Number One of the official
Transformers Movie forums, the ads will begin this weekend on CBS. Imaginary Number One has a sister who works for a promotions company and received a copy of an e-mail from Paramount announcing the ads would start to air. Here is a copy of the email Imaginary Number One posted:
"Subject: TRANSFORMERS - TELEVISION SPOT - FIRST LOOK
We are creating a PHASE ONE MEDIA campaign for TRANSFORMERS. The first television spot will air this coming Saturday during some sports programming and will continue on throughout televised media events throughout the month of April.
National publicity is trying for a first look on ET for this Friday. Would love to be able to offer your CBS affiliate a "first look" at the spot as well should they have interest as well.
Please pitch you local CBS stations and let me know ASAP so I can be sure to ship the spot to them in order for it to coincide with ET's FIRST LOOK.
A list of outlets and contact info would be greatly appreciated."

From
www.darkhorizons.com:
Meanwhile, Hugo Weaving has apparently won the role of voicing Megatron in the upcoming Transformers movie reports The IESB.
Weaving and Frank Welker, who voiced the cartoon version, have been in 'rumoured competition' for the role for a few months and now it seems the Aussie actor won out.
Never fear though cartoon fans, Welker will apparently voice a robot in the film anyhow - but not Megatron.
If true, this is great news! In addition to being a great nod to the fans, adding the most prolific voice actor in the business today to the cast is a great move!

Hugo Weaving to voice Megatron in Bay's Transformers?
There's a new email available on the
SectorSeven.org website which can be accessed with the password
NBETWO. The message alludes to actor
Hugo Weaving (Lord of the Rings, The Matrix) being cast as the voice of the evil Decepticon leader Megatron in this summer's upcoming
Transformers movie from Michael Bay, Paramount and Dreamworks.

Operation: Hungry Dragon 2 continues. As of today, Agent H. Weaving has officially convinced S.S., M.B., R.O., AND A.K. to assign him to oversee the Megaman issue. The recording will commence immediately.
All the years of investment into Agent Weaving's public persona have finally paid off. He will monitor the campaign from the inside and report on its progress free from suspicion.
By this summer, the population will think N.B.E.S. are nothing more than a figment of someone's overactive imagination.
Our power lies in our secrecy.
--------------------------------------------------
Hugo Weaving first made it big with his role as Agent Smith in Warner Brother's blockbuster
Matrix trilogy starring Keanu Reeves and
Hugo Weaving. He also gained further popularity after playing the role of the half-elf Elrond in Peter Jackson's
Lord of the Rings trilogy. One of Weaving's most recent roles was that of V in the movie translation of the political V for Vendetta starring Weaving alongside actress Natalie Portman.
The references to
Agent Weaving above is a reference to Weaving's role as
Agent Smith. "Megaman" is the name the humans give the frozen Megatron in issue #2 of
IDW's Transformers Movie prequel comic book series. The abbreviations from the email are as follows:
S.S. (Steven Spielberg)
M.B. (Michael Bay)
R.O. (Roberto Orci)
A.K. (Alex Kurtzman)
It is unknown at the time of this post what the "N.B.E.S." acronym stands for. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

A new rumor has been reported by
TFW2005. Apparently both Alternators Rumble and Jaguar Ravage are due out in the next few weeks. But that is just half of the rumor. The other part of the rumor has both figures being Wal-Mart exclusives. So far there has been no official news about this. Stay tuned to

Denyer has brought us what could be some interesting news. A poster by the name of Steve White has posted some curious information at
Transfans.net. According to Steve White Titan Books will begin publishing a Transformers comic in the United Kingdom. Here is what Steve White posted:
: |
Hi there. My name is Steve White. I'm going to be editing the new TF comic in the UK, due out from Titan in July to coincide with the movie release. We're working pretty far ahead and what I was hoping for was readers letters/artwork that we can run in the first couple of issues, which will be wrapped before the first one actually hits the streets. Any help gratefully received. Email me at steve.white@titanemail.com |
: |
The comic will be mostly movie continuity, serialising the IDW prequel material. However, we will be originating our 10-page strips, written by Si Furman. We have various artists lined up; first issue should see the return of Geoff Senior whose keen to have a go for old time's sake. That's TBC but looks pretty solid. |
These seems to have some legitimacy since the poster uses the domain Titan Books uses for contact.
