Well, 'happy' might not be the best word. But hear me out.

The IDW Transformers and Hasbro universe, their comics continuity, has been running for the past 13 years, and was announced - for lack of a better term - to reach its conclusion by the time the Unicron mini-series came to its own end, taking Lost Light and Optimus Prime with it (alongside Rom, Micronauts, GI Joe, MASK, and all the various casts and stories within).

As of this week, and after an initial showing at the San Diego Comic Con 2018 IDW panel, we have finally seen the final covers for the last issues of each of the three series - but most importantly for Lost Light and Optimus Prime.

Transformers News: Why I'm Happy the IDW Transformers Universe is Ending

Let's go a little into the background first, though: in October 2005, Simon Furman and EJ Su brought to the stage Infiltration #0, the revelation that Cybertronians had been on Earth for a while, Verity Carlo and Hunter O'Nion, and a new Marvel Ultimates-influenced 'Generation One' continuity - its Phase One - began.

A year later, in September 2006, Nick Roche and Simon Furman went back a little further in Spotlight: Shockwave, an issue that will become more and more relevant to everything happening in this universe up to its very end.

Some of those stories were cut short in 2008 (and concluded in Maximum Dinobots - until we came back to it all in Lost Light), as Shane McCarthy's All Hail Megatron saw the triumph of the Decepticons on Earth and the creation and arrival of Drift, some initial but vocal fan complaints (not all was bad!), which only got louder for the most part with what followed from 2009 to 2011, and Mike Costa's ongoing series. Then Optimus Prime was killed, again, and Orion Pax returned - the comics split in two parallel series: More Than Meets the Eye, and Robots in Disguise. Phase Two begins.

Part of the Phase Two stories, alongside the ongoings, were the Wreckers' Saga (now collected in one volume), the Autocracy trilogy (which we re-covered here), and the first proper crossover event in Dark Cybertron - which brought with it a much wider universe, and the arrival of Windblade (among others).

Since then, the ongoing series saw a third companion, in Windblade, and eventually Till All Are One. Dawn of the Autobots led into Days of Deception, then its second crossover Combiner Wars up to Titans Return, and opening the universe even further and wider in Revolution, Reconstruction and the final big event, First Strike, which ushered in the end of the Hasbro Universe through the unfortunate Transformers vs Visionaries miniseries, and the resulting summoning of Unicron.

Transformers News: Why I'm Happy the IDW Transformers Universe is Ending

So here we are, at the brink of it all. The universe is about to end, and I just told you I'm happy for it. Let me explain why, exactly:

  • Continuity - This is the bane of comics everywhere, I have said so before and I will keep on saying so until we stop considering 'canon' as something monolithic and impervious to change and modification. Continuity can be a useful tool, but taken to its extreme it's just silly, harmless, and a source of headaches - and unnecessary gatekeeping for readers who do not want to or cannot keep track of everything that happened ten years prior to the book they're reading right now. An entirely new, actually fresh start will clear everything before it - and a new continuity can be established, free from the self-imposed shackles that prevent potential fans to fully enjoy the books coming out. Hopefully, something looser, that will allow for further development as it continues.

  • IDW Publishing - The IDW staff have proven themselves extremely capable of creating good Transformers fiction (other fiction too, but this is the focus here of course). Sure, there have been pitfalls along the way, mostly down to the strained relationship between licensor and licensee, and how that affected the creators in their storytelling. But they have never entirely destroyed the Transformers story that was being told. With John Barber as EIC, I have the confidence that this will continue, strongly, into whatever new venture we will see the comics embark.

  • Timing - I said something very similar in a piece about the Transformers Bumblebee Movie, but it's worth repeating at this point: the entire Hasbro universe, outside of the fiction, is being reshaped. The live action movies have shifted tone and possible storytelling, with Paramount looking to start afresh; the comics are all being ended together, with stories having been developed for a long time already, by admission of the writers themselves (and TAAO and Wreckers also had their excellent farewells), and reaching a almost entirely organic conclusion; a new toyline, with some heavy fiction behind it, is being launched in Fall 2018; it's been 13 years. That's a new fan's entire life, and one now ripe for the seeding of a new story.

  • New talent - A lot of the creators, with the exclusion of editor John Barber, have already stated that they are not currently planning on returning to the books. Be it artists, or writers, or colourists, or anyone else involved in the creation of the books, we currently have no idea of who will be involved, and this opens doors to infinite potential: to name but a couple of fan favourites, Sarah Stone came into the books from fan-art work; Alex Milne had a similar trajectory from deviantArt, though with previous engagements at Dreamwave; Kei Zama was extremely popular on Tumblr before doing covers and eventually interiors; most current professional creators have been fans of the franchise since they started doing art or writing of any kind; we've seen several fan creators spotlighted in comics covers across the series and the years, and the prospect of entirely new talent is tantalisingly exciting. I am ready for all of it.

  • Comics precedent - This is a two-sided point, actually.

Firstly, comics history has a well proven track record of having limited series among its most influential of all time: I'm thinking of The Sandman, Lucifer, The Wicked and The Divine (end forthcoming), even Saga will end at some point (once the current hiatus is over). The same can be said for book series, and even big and small screen ones - in spite of the recent wave of rebooting and forced continuation - I mean, Marvel Transformers itself is famously a 4 issue mini-series that lasted for 80 numbers. Having an ending is good. It does not cancel out a story, it allows it to sit and mature with time and with every revisitation.

Secondly, the precedent set by the current IDW universe. The entirety of the creative teams involved have been working nothing short of miracles in establishing a seriously impressive layer of fertile ground for more stories to spring forth (not in the Botanica sense from ReGeneration One - sorry Simon). In an interview with the Twincast Podcast, Nick Roche spoke about 'a groove that was for everyone reading – and if that’s not for me, that’s fine' - starting with the inclusivity, diversity, and representation that the writers so far have established for the Transformers world, and carrying that into the next stories as a starting point. The precedent, the existing reality that made it into non-specialist media coverage, as well as triumphed within comics circles, is there, and it is a thing of wonder.

Transformers News: Why I'm Happy the IDW Transformers Universe is Ending

As I was working on the later stages of this comment, a similar piece from David Heslop was brought to my attention, and I wholeheartedly recommend heading over to read that too, as one phrase in particular jumped out at me: 'by giving us an ending, we get to experience the totality of this saga’s existence'.

Experiences can indeed be bittersweet, and provoke untold levels of emotion - be that good or bad - but we have all been witnesses to something unprecedented in a licensed comic property that started out way back when to sell toys and flesh out their packaging bios. Non-Anglophone readers are slowly gaining access to those stories too, with translations of MTMTE spearheading localised publishing pushes, and Japan receiving the full story from AHM onwards as we speak; the rest will hopefully follow too, even if much after the end of this particular era of stories.

And for that, for all of these thirteen (even just the number!) years, for all of these stories, yes - I am happy to see them come to an end. With an ending that the creators have meant and carefully planned. And an ending that I still hope will open to something bigger still in the years to come.

Synopsis
Some call him Goldfender, but the name's Bee... Bumblebee. On loan to MI6 and teamed with a human partner, Bee's trapped in the middle of a Cold War plot to disrupt British Secret Intelligence. But when things go wrong, it's up to Bee to discover if there's a traitor in their midst. In the spy world, allegiances can change just as easily as a Transformer.

well, kinda

Story
It has been a very long time since we saw anything in print or digital as a tie-in or lead-in or even just promotion, for the Paramount live action universe, as directed by Michael Bay. It looks as though, now that the plans are changing - and very much so - we're back in business however, and the old movie comics making team is back for the ride!

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1
with a theme song!

John Barber is clearly having fun with this mini-series, even just from the first issue, as the puns are aplenty, the references even more so, and the dynamic between Bumblebee and Omega Zero / David Reeve is hard to shake too far away from Ian Noble-Action Man and Kup, from the pages of Revolutionaries. The action is worthy of something that can be a movie blockbuster for sure, but it's their dialogue (and the acronyms) that sticks the most.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1
and the cheesy one-liners

That said, I am a little confused at the pitching of this series - as it's intended to be aimed at a younger audience, yet has very pulp, noir, crime references and context which a younger audience may very well not get at all. Plus, if it is indeed to lead into the upcoming Bumblebee movie, I'm very curious to see what this story established about the current Cybertronian situation on Earth.

Art
As team is back, Andrew Griffith returns next to Barber to work on the visuals for the former's script as the A.R.T.I.S.T., and as we already knew, his mechanical-but-organic, movie designs work amazingly (as does his architecture), and are dynamic without fault in their execution - which cannot otherwise be entirely said about some of the human renditions of the other side of the cast, unfortunately. It may, at this point, just be my personal taste getting in the way, however.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1
from Griffith's Twitter

Priscilla Tramontano does some seriously impressive work as the C.O.L.O.R.I.S.T. to go with the excellent base lines, and manages to bring both a fresh coat over some old-style looks, and make it all work as a new perspective on an old visual aesthetic. Partnering that up with some well placed, even spot on, SFX from regular L.E.T.T.E.R.E.R. Tom B Long, and you get an explosive mix that works extremely well with the punchy script for this opening issue.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1
boomboom

The covers for this series so far have been a huge selling point for myself and several other fans online, be it the regular Griffith / Tramontano variant, the Fico Ossio, Megatron-cameoing version, or the pulpy Sara Pitre Durocher take on the story - you can view them all in our comics database here, with credits!

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

Consider my interest very slightly piqued, at least insofar as we're getting some more human-bot interaction from Barber - as well as his usual net weaving, with Sector Seven, various continuity issue jugglings and fun dialogue - along with what this story will say about Bee losing his voice, how the movie version we saw develops from this very different character, and what other cameos might make it in both character and style.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Bumblebee: From Cybertron with Love #1
but we are

The movie aesthetic may turn off a fair few regular IDW style accustomed readers, but keeping the target in mind, younger fans will probably have grown up with this style and it's a great idea to have something Transformers comics based for them in the hands of Griffith and Tramontano. The covers are definitely also a big draw, and not one to be underestimated.

Synopsis
Wreck & Rule! The final entry in the Wreckers trilogy! They've been beaten up, torn apart, betrayed, and had their sins revealed. The few remaining Wreckers are more lost and lonelier than they've ever been, which makes it the perfect time for them to come under fire from an anti-Cybertronian campaigner and an old foe! Remember them fondly, because this is the "Requiem of the Wreckers." Written and drawn by Nick Roche (Transformers: Sins of the Wreckers, Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows)!

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
i will never tire of this

Story
The one-shot that concludes a story that almost started the second phase of the IDW Publishing Transformers comics universe (yes, I know, it was still in the Costa era, let me embellish the narrative here), is here. As we discussed with the writer and main artist Nick Roche in a Twincast Podcast episode here, 'this is the last story of the Wreckers, and there’s not enough characters to give them all a happy ending' but ultimately 'Hopeful, and about letting go.'

If you are all ready to start letting go, then, join me for a review below and make sure to join in with your own thoughts later.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
i, just,

We start much later than we left off with Sins of the Wreckers, after the death of Kup in Transformers vs Visionaries - and the story in the book is as much about Kup as it is about Springer, and Verity's connection to both of them and the Cybertronian world more in general, with Impactor's looming presence as they both head out to seek him for several reasons of closure and perhaps confrontation. The setting, of course, is not entirely ideal, given the events of both Revolution and First Strike (and the Ongoing, and All Hail Megatr-- you get it).

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
ROADTRIP

The writing, then, is dense. Very dense, as it is indeed delivering on the promise of tying up a lot of narrative threads that were left in the Wreckers saga, including Impactor, Mayhem and the aftermath of Sins, plus Springer's own personal 'quest' if you will. All of which includes revenging, avenging, venting, and some extremely spoilery interactions between characters that need to be enjoyed in the comfort of one's personal reading experience.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
not pictured above, of course

Parts of the story give us an idea of how close Roche had been working with the rest of the IDW creative team, as we get some developments from across the wider universe, but also potential repercussions on what we'll be seeing with the end of this narrative universe too, even just in potential. But as a story of coming to terms with loss, acceptance of change, and pursuit of truth(s), this is a solid addition to any comics reading reserve.

Art

Brendan Cahill does some amazing work on the central section of the book, with the roadtrip that Verity and Springer take, and his lines are clean and so very well modelled to Roche's style that - while the personal flairs are clear and obvious - there is no jarring difference between the two, and the action flows beautifully.

Having the original artist for Impactor and Springer, as Wreckers anyway, from the Marvel days - Geoff Senior - take part in the comic as the artist on the flashbacks was a brilliant move, and it is executed marvelously. I understand that the appeal here will be to followers of the Transformers universe rather than younger/newer readers, but let Roche have his fanboy moment too.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
Some Cahillformer action for you

The two Joshes from the IDW stables, Perez and Burcham, both provide their skills and talents to that fluidity that the artistic team had set up in the tripartite delegation of linework duties (Cahill, Roche, Senior) - and to be entirely honest, they are so in sync that other than the obvious switches in style (Senior vs the other two) it is almost impossible to distinguish their masterful handiwork. For a book with these many layers, the visual cohesion can only be a bonus.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
nuhuh, not showing spoilers

There are some truly excellent moments in the script that further sediment the tonal contrast (never really jarring, even with two characters' very distinct voices), and the lettering team of both Tom B. Long and Shawn Lee are able to bring it even further with some visual font gags or at least highlights, and spruce that dialogue just a little more.

In terms of visual work, I want to spend a word on the backmatter in the one-shot, mostly due to editorial and Nick Roche, with some of the preparation that went into the book for Senior to come into the contemporary comics (in style and tone, mostly) and for the general research and development going into the book. Do not skip it, seriously.

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

As I said above, this is not a light book - much like Sins before it, and by Roche's own admission, there is a lot happening in not too much space, and self-editing is very hard. I commend David Mariotte for the impressive amount of work he undoubtedly put into this, but it's clear that Roche got as much space (and time) as he wanted, perhaps needed, to tell the final stories about these characters.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: Requiem of the Wreckers
sigh

What has been achieved in the cutting is a hard-hitting, emotional, darkly humorous story and interweaving of stories within it - admittedly, stories that will only really land with readers who have been following these narratives since they started, there is no escaping any of that. That said in what Roche, with Senior, Cahill, Burcham, Perez, Long, Lee, and Mariotte, have had a hand in creating since 2009 and brought all the way to 2018, we got an imperfectly cut diamond, which refracts light at whim and when least expected, perhaps - but a gorgeous, unique one nonetheless.

Directly from IDW Publishing and post-embargo time, we can share with all the solicitations for the IDW Publishing comics in the Transformers and Hasbro Universe (with its one, collected Rom the Spaceknight book), both heading towards the close of their narrative life as we all know by now, with the Unicron series in full swing, and Lost Light and Optimus Prime hurtling towards the end - and plenty of tie-in books for the live action Bumblebee movie due in December.

Please be aware there may be some spoilers in the synopses below, and some hints in the covers, but other than that, take a look, and join the discussion in the Energon Pub discussion boards!

The Beginning of the Beginning of the End
(Spoiler free-ish)

Synopsis
Not a whimper, nor a bang-the end comes with a squall of entropy shrieking from the ravenous maw of death itself. The message is clear: Unicron has arrived. The Transformers lock into a desperate bid to save Rom's homeworld from the world-killer - but why has Unicron chosen this world on his path to Cybertron... and Earth? The biggest story in the history of Transformers starts now: for Unicron's arrival can mean nothing less than the end of a universe.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Unicron #0 - #FCBD
a narrative universe, that is

Story
First things first: this issue is part of the Free Comic Book Day initiative, in which participating physical comics stores give out free copies of comic books from a number of publishers. If you don't know where to find a store near you, try this tool (works relatively accurately outside of US and Canada too)!

Second: even just the opening, and the preview, of this book will spoil at least one and a half storylines from the current Optimus Prime ongoing series. The cover does too. So that's that, and we all know now. I will not dwell on it further, but if you'd rather wait for the next two issues of OP to hit before finding this issue, do so!

yeah, pretty much

Now, into the main course: John Barber brings Unicron to the Transformers universe, fully, entirely, wholly and viciously . And I really mean that last one. There is no sympathy from me towards those asking for the entire IDW universe casts to be annihilated as the continuity ends, but it looks like Barber is definitely starting to trim those down from the get go (a recurring theme since David Mariotte's arrival on editorial, now that I think about it...) - and not even in the main part of the story.

Snerk

Optimus Prime is the more or less de facto narrator (his caption tag says so), and the technique is one that will be familiar to all of Barber's readers - but even so, this ..thing, this threat is new to him too. He does not have prior knowledge. None of the characters beside him do, nor does the Solstar Order, nor does the reader. And that narration helps us - established fans of Transformers, and in the know about the mythos in general - see this new Unicron, this IDW version of him, in a different light.

I give you: OP raising an eyebrow

There are of course some lighter moments, where possible, mostly in the form of wit quickly truncated by the events taking place around the characters (Rom's deadpan behaviour, Wheeljack being himself, Pyra Magna's shade towards Optimus), but for such a short story, there are so many heavy beats that you will most definitely be wanting some more.

Art

Alex Milne, who has had a taste of Elonian blood already in the Shining Armor mini-series that saw the first collaboration between Cybertronians and Rom's Solstar Order (including specific characters in this issue, who reference that fact), returns to similar worlds to bring some painstaking detail to the frames he lays out with almost dark glee. And, most admirably I thought, he gives us a sense of the sheer scale that Unicron holds compared to everything else on the page, without ever fully showing the planet - this is not Unicron's story, after all, but that of the people facing him.

hi Bob

Colours are provided by a previous collaborator of Barber's and a new for Milne, Sebastian Cheng, last seen in Revolution and Revolutionaries. While showing the same vibrancy of some of those series, in fact, he manages to convey some truly dark moments for everyone involved with some impressive lighting angles and surfaces.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers Unicron #0 - #FCBD
..it's really hard not to spoil..

What else can I add about Tom B. Long's lettering, really, at this stage - other than reiterate his necessary role in something as vast and encompassing as the entire Hasbro Universe and its unmaker, with captions placed right, dialogue paced out, and a new title redesign that ..just works.

There is just the one cover, being a FCBD comic, but the composition - one that we have seen many a time, is a pretty good reminder of the immense powers at work on the universe right here, and Sara Pitre Durocher delivers.

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

As I said above, the pacing that Barber has created - by dropping us into the story exactly as it's happening (unavoidable, given the scheduling of the book compared to the ones leading into it) and building to it through Revolutionaries and Optimus Prime, Shining Armor, and the early days of exRID - allows for some pretty breakneck reading and experiencing of the heavier moments taking place in the pretty short issue. And it's done in such a way that will allow several readers to really want to get into the main story come July, while not relying on senseless shock value twists or carnage for its own sake (yes, we all know what I'm referring to here).

More snerk

Milne and Cheng work really well together too, which is a low-key relief. Having seen both of their work apart from each other, I wasn't entirely sure it would end up looking this good, and am excited to see more (even just on covers, like for Unicron #1). The extra treat in the book, though? John Barber's letter at the very end, tidying up a lot of the threads that have lead to this moment, and initially written in January - there's Revolutionaries, Dark Cybertron, exRID, First Strike, and more, laid out for readers who wanted to follow up without keeping everything at hand. It's good. It's Barber. It's good Barber.
