Now, while this guy could've used some resculpting to make him look a bit less like a younger Commissioner Gordon, it does seem more appropriate for human TF characters to be in scale with 3.75" Joe and Marvel Legends figures. Has there been one in that scale of Tony Stark in a 3-piece suit instead of armor? That'd actually be more appropriate, since ol' G.B. was basically Tony without the alter-ego or substance abuse. No offense to Bob Budianski, of course; Blackrock is still among the best recurring human characters created for TF fiction. The little touch that makes Leadfoot the greatest entrant in the PCC line IMHO is his being sponsored by Blackrock Oil, so I'd say G.B. getting this sort of appreciation is long overdue, but coincides nicely with IDW reprinting his early appearances over the next year.

There are much more diplomatic ways to have said that, instead of mocking TFCC. I mean, come on. Hasbro's got the right to protect their property, and yes, I buy the 3rd Party stuff too but the Transfomers are all their propewrty, just as Potter is still Rowling's even though she's done with them. TFCC is a child company, they HAVE to respect Hasbro's wishes, there's no other option.
You wanna win friends, Dairycon, you should have said something more perofessional, "Yes, as an unnoffical convention not affiliated with Hasbro or TT, we do allow other items into the Vendor Hall and will continue to do so."

Well like it or not, Botcon is competition of sorts, so going out and saying "Yeah, we're not going to do like certain other guys are doing" is just standard PR, not to mention it was brought up a few times in other threads whether or not other conventions would follow suit, so it's not like the question wasn't asked.

I agree, it could have been stated better. You can't have your club name printed on official products and support 3rd parties. Fun Pub has no other choice.
I'm sure there is a bit of animosity still, with Botcon throwing out an early con and overlapping Dairycon due to Joecon and the anniversary, and those things associated. Competition is ugly. But did Botcon state no 3rd parties before pre-reg? In my opinion, it's common sense that these items wouldn't be in any ways promoted or encouraged, but to have them confiscated on any level should have been addressed before registration opened.

to be honest i see nothing wroung with dairycon dishing out some harmless ribbing at hasbros expense.
and if it eanrs them a few extra brownie points wiht the fan community thats good too
only stuff i buy anymore hasro wise is the comics and the dvd sets overtime but i go with third party figures all the way for my collection.

i gotta agree with you on that man
as they say it takes one to sling mud and two to fight dirty and they chose to fight dirty so they deserve some negative reaction from the fanbase and if dairycon comes out looking better its all good in my book

transformers figure wise i buy all my stuff through fellow fans on the usual websites
for the most part though at least 75% of my collection is thrid party stuff
hasbro wants to protect their copyrights i got no problem with that but their nuts if they think they speak for the entire fan base on the matter or if they think they can decide the matter for any of us as collectors
their will always be fans willing to go out on a limb to pic k up the slack in providing the collectors in the fanbase with what they want figure wise when hasro/takaratomy cant or wont.
so long as thrid party groups continue to do so in a reasonable respectful manner where the law is concerned i see nothing wrong with this or that third party group providing a collector in the fanbase with a actual choice in the matter
the way hasbro acts sometimes though you would think they were upset cause someone managed to beat them to the punch on a idea over time. or because that group upstaged them in making the better figure in thier way.
only stuffi buy from hasbro are the comics and the dvd sets to be honest
Posted by Dark Ops on March 18th, 2012 @ 2:10pm CDT
It's one thing to be turned away, and it's quite another to have your stuff taken away. Is the law on their side when it comes to protecting IP? Sure. Is it on their side with seizing property? Doubtful.

Botcon arent going to confiscate third party toys from fans at the con, im pretty sure nobody said theyre going to do it and they CANT DO IT ANYWAY!!! ITS ILLEGAL!!! They cant add in caveats to attendee rules, they cant force you to hand over your merchandise, they can just stop sellers selling third party, thats it. And anybody who considers this THAT big a deal, i suggest you stay at home, quit moaning and stick to buying the toys online like we all do the other 362 days a year that botcon isnt on
they banned the promotion and sale of third party toys, thats it.
Dairycon are probably sick of everybody asking about this, hence the statement
Thank god we arent dealing with this crap for Auto Assembly

Posted by Stumpybot on March 18th, 2012 @ 10:11pm CDT
all i meant was that they cant confiscate items from attendees. Everybody that has registered as an ATTENDEE agreed to terms of condition, which did not specify this, therefore nobody can/will retroactively change this, as legally nobody has agreed to it.
Sellers obviously have to in order to attend Botcon, im not arguing that point, thats simple stuff. theyve been told not to bring the third party items, so they shouldnt.
Posted by Bowspearer on March 18th, 2012 @ 10:29pm CDT
TransformersEmporium wrote:You should seriously do a lil research. They said in no uncertain terms, and its in the contract all dealers had to sign. All 3rd party items will be taken and made the property of Hasbro and or given to authorities. Sellers will be escorted out and possibly perm banned from ever attending again. Not That I give much of a crap about personally, cause I only go as a fan I get my stuff direct from my own suppliers, but its still messed up.
And so they should be. It's like blatantly trying to pass of counterfeit banknotes as real money in a bank and deposit it into your account. If anyone tried it on in that situation or in any other bootlegging situation involving dealings with a large company, they'd wind up before a judge being charged with fraud and very shortly afterwards, behind bars and playing "pick up the soap". Dealers who try and sell third party TFs and KOs there should count themselves lucky that having their counterfeit toys confiscated and being banned from BotCon is the worst they'll face in terms of repercussions.
Then again, the fact that they're handed over to authorities means that maybe said dealers will be prosectued, which might actually give 3rd party dealers a badly needed wake-up call!
As this proves, they're not going after attendees and so they wont be affected by this. Dealers meanwhile who take banned items into the convention signing contracts saying they'll be confiscated (what are they going to argue in a court of law? "Your Honor, Botcon unlawfully took my illegal bootleg toys"? Give me a break).

You then posted a link to this thread in the other thread where this was happening, not only making those who might not be aware of it aware of it, but in doing so, making them aware of this discussion.
What you fail to grasp is that you don't have to be a lawyer here to see what's going on- just have a clear understanding of the underlying ethics.
Now I get why that would be devastating for you and your business - as from what I can tell of the vast majority of your posts (both in terms of you defending bootlegs and plugging your site where you sell them) your plan in joining here was to try and drum up business for your site (which is fair enough on your part).
However what you clearly weren't counting on and what you need to accept is that when you trade in dodgy merchandise, which KOs are, that while some people wont care, others will have ethical concerns and will call you out on it- that's entirely their right.
This may be an alien concept to you, but society expects adults to be accountable- that's all the new Botcon dealer T&C forces dealers to be.

We are getting a bit off topic here...
Anyway, props to Dairycon, that cracked me up, and as a convention that takes nothing seriously, this is perfectly in line with what they do.
Now, for my two cents of the whole third party thing.
1. KO's and 3rd party products are two entirely different things, you may find your opinion otherwise, but for the most part, it's true. The goal of most 3rd parties is to fill the gap for collectors that Hasbro and Takara Tomy will not. That has always been the goal and will always be the goal. KO companies's goal is to cheaply and illegally copy an existing design from a copyright holder. This is THE fundamental difference. So let's cover specifics
2. 3rd party figures are not IP holder designs: This is clearly the case, now there are some exceptions to this statement, mostly pertaining to iGear, namely, Faith Leader and the MP Seekers. However, let's look at this on a whole: City Commander, an armor add-on for Ultra Magnus, making him look vaguely like his G1 incarnation, now, not speaking for Hasbro here, but it was a pretty good bet that Hasbro would never release something like that, why? It's not really cost effective for them. TFC Hercules, A six figure combining team, made out of voyager sized robots. Recently, the closest we have seen to this is five deluxes or a bunch of duplo like limbs. Once again, targeting the core market for them, children. These designs are created and manufactured by independent companies, Hasbro can lay no claim whatsoever to the designs, they are not named after Hasbro products, nor do they contain any Hasbro product within.
3. Hasbro is for kids, 3rd party is for collectors: Hasbro has stated multiple times that their market is for children, that the vast majority of their profit is from children. 3rd party companies are aimed at adult collectors, supposedly a small portion of the overall market for Transformers. We have also seen recently, that despite the current economic status, they do continually post a profit each fiscal quarter. So if we are to interpret this information, 3rd party has not made Hasbro fall into the red, now, there is no way of knowing if it has cut into profits, if any at all, due to how many variables there are. However, if we, as collectors, are such a small margin, it should not be affecting Hasbro's bottom line.
4. KO's are wrong, but 3rd parties are a grey area: Let's face it, KO's are wrong, and I give Hasbro every right to go after them, in fact, I encourage it. 3rd parties...this is a bit hard to say. Original designs only vaguely reminiscent of something else are always a grey area. It doesn't help that they are not using copyrighted names, art, or anything really. Yes, they are based off of something, but the same can be argued for just about anything else: Transformers drew from Diaclone, Micromachines, etc. (owned by Hasbro I know), but, they also were pretty clearly influenced by Gundam, Macross and the like. In my opinion, Hasbro pursuing 3rd parties, and winning the lawsuits, may set a very dangerous precedent where everyone can sue anyone for being based off of or looking like something else. For instance, Guilty Crowne, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, Tiger and Bunny to an Extent, Gundam, Full Metal Panic!, Marcross and many others all have designs that can be considered similar to each other, and an uneducated judge or jury may not be able to tell the difference. All hold individual IP, if Hasbro won, all would have grounds, if they decided to capitalize on it.
It's not as if Hasbro isn't impressed either, it has been shown repeatedly at TFCon (I don't know about Botcon personally) that both sides have mutual respect. Hasbro reps were extremely impressed with 3rd parties, and for the most part, Hasbro is held in an almost reverence. So there seems, for the most part, to be no bad blood.
So I guess it boils down to: KO, go after it by all means. 3rd parties, tread carefully on both sides.
I have a deep respect for Hasbro and most 3rd parties. I understand Hasbro's concern, but having FunPub write the policy was not the best decision in any means. While this is unfortunate that 3rd party products are banned at BotCon, and I personally will never attend one now (no 3rd party is not the reason however), I can understand the reasoning. This being said, I support 3rd parties, and hope this will resolve itself in a way where they can stick around.
Enough rambling from me, time to go get goofy with some Fourze

Read the fan fic or just look at the exclusives. Just try taking a gander at the stuff before getting all uppity about the announcement.
Hell, if Botcon announced that Coca Cola were an official sponsor, we would endorse Pepsi. Not because we hate Botcon, but because it's funny.
