Per CNBC analyst Tom DiChristopher Disney could be a major obstacle standing in the way of Hasbro's purchase of DreamWorks Animation. In other words Disney must approve this deal! Hasbro has a very lucrative contract with Walt Disney to produce toys based on their Star Wars and Marvel Comics properties. Senior Analyst Steph Wissink at Piper Jaffray estimates that 25 to 30 percent of Hasbro's business is tied up with Disney. Hasbro owning Disney's biggest rival animation studio could present a huge problem.

After DreamWorks' recent box-office disappointments, including "Turbo" and "Rise of the Guardians." CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, also held talks with another potential buyer, Japanese telecommunications giant SoftBank.

Disney should just buy Hasbro.

Then they could have Emma's yellow VW bug on Once Upon A Time turn out to be G1 Bumblebee.

Nah, see, first Hasbro buy Dreamworks, then Disney buys Hasbro, then Disney buys back Saban, then Disney makes a deal with Bandai that forces them to join with Hasbro, then Disney buys Bandai and merges it with Hasbro, then Tomy gets merged with Disney's new Hasbrandai, then Warner Bros and Universal merge with each other, then Mattel and Lego merge together, and all three go at each other trying to eat the other two in a three-way free-for-all of Disney vs. Warnerversal vs. Mattego. 8-}

so I take it you havent seen Star Wars Rebels?

My problem is that Disney is not trying to make anything new anymore. Yes, it's famous for breathing new life in old fairy tales but it was new life. Now, they have bought other peoples creativity and plan to milk it until we hate it. Star Wars used to be a group of special movies that were important. Now they are just a cash cow that will always been on the air or in the theaters in some way while there are still people to buy tickets. Yeah, they may be good movies, but its still a dillution.

I don't want them to own hasbro because its good for SOMETHING to not be owned by disney.

you know. I thought Turbo was disney. Silly me. But really. Disney takes Marvel and Star Wars from Hasbro. That's bad yeah. But really? Hasbro is pretty much the king of those kinds of toys right now. Dumb decision on Disney's part. Especially when dreamworks has NEVER been a threat to them.

Oh GOD no. Anything that increases Disney's ownership over everything (that isn't Japanese anyway, as Japan seems to be the only place where businesses will tell Disney to get stuffed) is a baaaaad idea.

Also, whoever it was that said Disney should buy Bandai...not gonna happen. 1, Bandai is Japanese, so they're out of Disney's reach anyway. 2, Bandai is so enormous that even Disney couldn't afford to acquire them. Mickey Mouse can't defeat Gundam I'm afraid. Or Kamen Rider. Or Godzilla. Or any of the other millions of franchises Bandai owns (and unlike Disney, they don't have a reputation as insufferable legal pricks). Bandai is going to live forever- I'll wager a lot longer than Disney.

You'd rather watch Dreamworks continue to go down the toilet on their own? (The Croods? Turbo? Mr. Peabody and Sherman?) Dreamworks Animation is to Disney what the Go-Bots were to Transformers.

I think he was just joking about Disney buying Bandai... but you're dreaming if you think Disney can't buy Bandai. Disney is so much bigger than bandai it's not funny. Disney has a market cap of 153.51 billion dollars, Bandai 5.17 Billion

Disney is quite big, but given Bandai's location and the large amount of faith and support they have from their consumer base (coupled with the generally more independent attitude Japanese companies tend to have) I don't think Disney could buy Bandai, mainly as Bandai could easily turn them down and survive without them, and also as Disney would not have enough to gain from the buyout to compensate for the huge expenditures they'd have to make to buy them.

TL;DR: Disney COULD buy Bandai but they won't and if they did it wouldn't go well for them.

All this just looks and sounds like everyone playing a very big game of monopoly. Wonder if they are playing with Bumblebee's fuzzy dice? >:oP Really, though, if that's the case then Hasbro are literally playing their own game, which means Disney don't need to buy Hasbro, they just need to buy monopoly, thus winning the game by buying the very game they are playing. There's possibly an Inception joke in here somewhere...but I can't make it that far.

Shame I'm not in on it, I kill it at monopoly every Christmas. The Transformers version, of course :BOT:

I can see great things coming from this but also disastrous things can come from it. Disney, if they own Star Wars, should buy Hasbro. However, if they did, in spite of how much I love my Mega Morphers Buzz Lightyear decked out in his "Techno-Gear" Disney should leave Transformers alone. Sure that might sound like some elitist comment, and I accept that. My reason for it though is quite simple. Disney messed up a lot of things. Inspector Gadget, Underdog, people's minds in the long run these days. They did do good things with other properties like Marvel. Hell I want to see BH6 but my point stands. I just don't want to see Transformers go downhill. Thank you I am Groot.

Dangers of capitalism, horrors, it's all the same. Originally it was "The Landlord's Game" demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants. Eventually when monopoly was "created" the on the nose allegory was lost, but hey, it still teaches how horrific unregulated capitalism can be.

According to Deadline.com, "DreamWorks Animation is deeply engaged in two potentially game changing negotiations that could transform the company - including one with Hasbro to forge a family entertainment powerhouse to be called DreamWorks-Hasbro. The other talks are with Hearst to turn DWA's AwesomenessTV into a joint venture."

DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg would become chairman of the combined operation, the website says.

This would be a huge win for Hasbro. Dreamworks doesn't know what to do with itself. They could tap Hasbro huge catalog of intellectual property.
Toys are a waning business, kids being born now are all about virtual play, even movies are not as attractive as they were to previous generations.

I agree with you on some of those movies, but the Croods made $587 million world wide and cost $135 million to make. Also dont forget How to Train Your Dragon 2 which made $615 million and cost $145 million to make. They are not producing all hits (like Frozen)but they certainly aren't dead yet.

Well that was quick! As soon as we got wind that Hasbro had expressed interest in buying DreamWorks on Thursday, it appeared as of yesterday (i.e. one day later), the deal has already gone kaput! In the world of Deal or No Deal ... NO DEAL!

Various reasons are the cause of the quick collapse of these talks. From a predictably negative reaction from Disney, to Wall Street analysts who deemed the $35 a share asking price from Dreamworks too steep, to Hasbro shares losing 4% on Thursday and an additional 2% on Friday. Perhaps there are some additional reasons, but the bottom line is that this deal won't be happening in this reality. You can check out the full articles about the demise of the Hasbro/DreamWorks via HollywoodReporter.com and NYtimes.com.

Kind of a bummer, but I guess the status quo is the same, so it's not like it's a defeat. Maybe.

Still, it could have been cool to see what kind pf animated TF series that partnership may have produced. Maybe in a different life...

My first thought was, why would Hasbro want to merge with a failing company and put the CEO of the failing company, Jeffrey Katzenberg, in charge?

My suspicion is that Hasbro is really courting Disney, and their merger talks with DreamWorks and Softbank were to make their intended suitor jealous. I have read that Disney has 30% of Hasbro's business in toys; which includes Star Wars, Marvel, Disney Junior and Disney Princess. A merger between the two is probably inevitable, its just a matter of when and under what circumstances. If Hasbro can show that they are a desirable partner to competing companies, they can negotiate a better deal with Disney.

If they do merge, we can also get a collection of Marvel era Transformers comics with issue 3, featuring Spider-Man.
