Site sponsor Robotkingdom has put a pre-order for a Hasbro Platinum Edition Unicron. The final design has not been revealed but it is expected to be similar to the 25th Anniversary Unicron which was an Amazon exclusive and featured a new head sculpt. It is set for a December 2016 release.

So, this'll make a total of four special commemorative uses (Universe 2008 Welcome to TF 2010, Amazon, and now Platinum Edition) of the Armada Unicron mold?

I just sold my 25th anniversary Amazon exclusive! No regrets, it was awesome but it did just stand on a display collecting dust. I think it was $75 back in 2011 I pray it's not $150 for the people who want this .

I suppose this does make sense. They have made Platinum sets this year for every other main character of the 1986 movie, why not one for the big antagonist?

Not a Headmaster/Base version of Unicron? Disappointed.

WHAT?! He is only $129? But he has the word 'platinum' in his name. After all the other platinum price gouges, I would've expected him to go for $200.

Give the crazy prices for even small Platinum Edition box sets and how they priced Trypticon I would be very surprised if they didn't put him at around US$200. Supreme Starscream was US$110 two years ago and he wasn't nearly as complex as Unicron. We'll see.

Edit: I suppose the US price probably wont stray too far from the Chinese release if Robotkingdom's price holds.

How close does Takara-Tomy's Transformers 2010 Anniversary edition of Unicron come in your estimation?

What didn't you like about the WtTF2010 version? Aside from the clear hand and some extra paint apps on the arms I thought he was pretty screen accurate. I preferred him far more than the dark and metallic Amazon version.

Given the release date Robotkingdom being the one to break the news I wonder if this will actually be a 2017 Year of the Rooster release? Can't imagine what colors they'd choose if that were the case.

That's...not a bad price. Based on inflation and time if honestly say that's an old price as long as he's not glowing green and translucent and suppose to invoke him about to explode

I dont know guys, the prices on Robot kingdom are usually the lowest and far lower than what they go for at retail. Platinum Optimus Primal was 119$ for instance and was released in the US for 150. I am saying that the price at US retail will be minimum 150$ for this toy. And its no use buying from Robot Kingdom to save (if you are in the US) because the shipping will come out to over 150$ anyways.

Excellent point, and it'll go with the other movie related Platinum sets.

Well, I look forward to hunting for his minicon at least. Platinums seems to be ironically hit and miss in regard to their paintjobs. Springer looks to be the best version yet, but they don't know how to draw flames, so both Hot Rod and Rodimus look bad. I wonder how Unicron will look - great or terrible. Either way I'm not sure I want to replace my Amazon Unicron.

Hopefully the box art will look like the toy. It's a small pet peeve, but I dislike it when the art doesn't match the toy and we've gotten a lot of that lately.

What exactly are you looking for in a Unicron color scheme? I was putting together thoughts and pics and stumbled on a post from Megatronus with pretty much all my thoughts. Both the 2010 and Amazon Unicron's have their merits as he points out:

megatronus wrote:I own both, and each has their own allure. This site actually has great galleries comparing them. Here's a prime shot:

The problem is that the movie uses a wide ranging palette of colors. I really think it's a matter of personal preference. Compare the above to each of these shots from the movie:

Some shots have more grey, others more blue. Also, the oranges vary. The two versions tease those differences out into two equally serviceable versions.

Once I have the space to do so, I plan on displaying both. 2010 Unicron in planet-mode, since the black wash on the round planet cover-pieces really pop and highlights the mold's details. Amazon Unicron in robot-mode, since I think that version meshes a bit better with my Classics/Generations toys.

For me, I'll probably buy any Unicron they release. But what I'd specifically like to see from the Armada mold is that stupid clear hand replaced with solid colored plastic. That's annoyed me since day 1.

I'm interested to see how he'll differ from 2010 and Amazon though :-?

Inflation mixed with a collectors oriented market =\= price gouging.

Personally, it would have paid more if they released a more movie accurate version when they first released it. So yeah, I'll pay more now. Go ahead Hasbro. Charge what you need to do that you can keep making transformers I want to buy. Go ahead. I'm cool with it.

IDW has stated that they want to stay away from the "religious" stuff with Transformers, so Primus and Unicron haven't been a part of the modern stories they're telling. However, in so far as Unicron is (or used to be) a "multiversial singular entity," I believe the "Darkness" of the "Dead Universe" in the IDW comics is basically Unicron's manifestation in that corner of the multiverse.

Posted by o.supreme on June 22nd, 2016 @ 2:56pm CDT
I guess... I mean look at TF:TM. Unicron doesn't have to have anything to do with spirituality. Personally I never thought of Unicron or Primus as "gods", merely as beings of extreme power, in the case of Unicron, destruction.

But hey, I'm good with that either way, just seems like a missed opportunity.

It will be upwards of 150$ 100%. Robot kingdowm is always the cheapest price for these. Case in point: Bigbadtoystore has it up now for 170$.

BUT you can wait for a discount if you dont mind the chance of it selling out before a discount happens.

I hate to be this guy, but on Primus, you're just flat out incorrect on this:
Image

Image
That's not just a tag line for those covers, Primus has been brought up plenty since 2012.

Additionally, characters such as Drift, Star Saber, and even Skids have religious tendencies which have been explored.

As for Unicron, well, I'll wait for someone else to link to my now a bit out-of-date thread about that, but there are theories :-?

Also, I want the Mini-con in this upcoming Platinum release to be Bug General colors without flaky blue Bug General vac metal chrome. Let's do it. Let's dream the dream.

Hmmm, thanks for the heads up on that, ScottyP. I could swear I've read that about the IDW comics wanting to stay away from the "religious" stuff, but maybe it just meant in the sense of having literal "gods" active in the story and influencing the universe. Many characters seem to doubt that the ancient stories of Primus are even true, and Primus' appearances so far in the comics have been relegated to visualized legends as narrated by other bots in the present day. If we do get a "Unicron" at some point in IDW, I'm fairly certain he will be linked to the Dead Universe.

Wolfman Jake wrote:Hmmm, thanks for the heads up on that, ScottyP. I could swear I've read that about the IDW comics wanting to stay away from the "religious" stuff,
You most likely read that from either here or from other sources it got that info from:
The IDW universe is the confusing one. Writer Simon Furman outright said that the IDW universe would have "no Primus. No Unicron". In accordance with this, the Furman-penned Stormbringer, rather than have Transformers swear by Primus, instead had them swear by Primacron, but a monkeywrench was thrown into the works when Primus's name was heard being taken in vain in Eric Holmes's Megatron Origin #4. Furman attempted to justify this on his blog by claiming that this was not the Primus, but simply "something or someone" called Primus that had existed some point. [2]
However, the next paragraph explains the change of mind about Primus for IDW's comics:
With Furman's removal as the primary architect of the IDW universe, things got changed: "Chaos Theory Part 2" by James Roberts refers to a Primus. However, he is not only referred to as a being that Optimus doesn't believe in, he's mentioned in conjunction with two other gods, Mortilus and Adaptus, that Optimus also didn't believe in. This then led to a whole new version of the Primus creation myth in the 2012 More Than Meets The Eye annual: Primus was the first god who split himself into five separate gods, and he had taken the form of Vector Sigma after a vicious battle against Mortilus. Later on, Thirteen Primes come to power on Cybertron, ruling thirteen tribes. Alpha Trion, one of these Thirteen mentions that they possessed a bond to Primus.

The only Platinum Edition release I'm chompin' at the bit for right now is the "The Transformers: The Movie" five character "Autobot Heroes" set, and then only really for a better painted G1 Ultra Magnus. I still don't care for the Takara version with its red thighs. The regular Hasbro retail version is okay, but the metallic blue on this new Platinum Edition Version just looks gorgeous! The extra paint details for more G1 screen accuracy help a lot too. The rest of the set will probably become hand-me-downs to my nephew, unless I like a few like Blurr or Kup enough to replace my Hasbro Generations and "Autobot Warriors" versions respectively. I'm already perfectly satisfied with my Takara Legends Arcee and Springer.

Ture it still can transform, how ever since the 2nd right hand is upside-down it wont hold prims 2nd gun, but that could just be mold degradation

Please use the right currency as to not scare us all. It was 299$ Singaporean, which is 225$ USD. That means the ballpark figure for the US will be 200$ which makes perfect sense for a set that has 3 deluxes, a voyager and a leader.

You and I have a different definition of perfect sense. I don't consider this set worth a dime over $140, going off of regular prices for those sizes. I've found the platinum line to be nothing more than Hasbro's way of milking money from gullible collectors. Sometimes the clearance pricing us reasonable, though.

You and I have a different definition of perfect sense. I don't consider this set worth a dime over $140, going off of regular prices for those sizes. I've found the platinum line to be nothing more than Hasbro's way of milking money from gullible collectors. Sometimes the clearance pricing us reasonable, though.

Gotta agree. $200 is insane.

You can cobble together a set for under $150 easy. I'll give it $150 for the premium paint jobs only.

We are saying the same things actually, I meant it makes perfect sense... for a platinum set ;) If a pack of 3 deluxes is around 100$, a leader and a voyager added to that would be another hundred
