IGN has interviewed Transformers Movie director Michael Bay. In the interview Bay talks about the production, fans, Steven Spielberg and more.

But it is not just that. Michael Bay also told in the interview that he had a very interesting idea. He wanted to use a Transformer that could transform into a huge carrier. Too bad, but his idea proved to be too expensive. Michael Bay further reacterd: " I had an amazing aircraft-carrier idea that was just too expensive, so maybe another movie… that'll get the fans talking! "

Dude! Tidal Wave would kick ASS! Here's hoping we'll see him in a film someday.

Besides, it'd be pretty cool to see more non-G1 names and characters in the movies...

I dun care bout Broadside, Tidal Wave will always be the one I will rememeber when I think of a transforming Carrier.

I know, that exactly why I would prefer Tidal Wave...

the G1 Universe has had it's time in the sun and then some, I would like to see more new characters get movie incarnations like Tidal Wave and Evac.

That would be awesome. I'm gonna have to go with Tidal Wave though, a Decepticon aicraft carrier would be way cooler than an Autobot.

Yeah, I also thought it was pretty cool if it would have happened. But with ideas like these I wonder what more we can expect.

Btw, don't you think that it wouldn't only be too expensive, but would the American navy be willing to lend Bay an aircraft carrier?

Also, I think that if there was an aircraft carrier, it would have been a Decepticon -> Blackout... Since according to Blackout's bio, he is the one in 'charge' of exportation. Think about it.. in stead of an helicopter, he would have been a bad and bigass carrier 8).

I think carriers are LAME. Seems like a waste of assets to me. Not very creative. I'm really not into the bigger transformers like Fortress Maximus, Trypticon, and ones like that.

I wonder if the carrier would've been Tidal Wave, or Broadside, or some other character adapted. Or a borderline "new character", like Barricade or Blackout(reused names, completely different in almost every other respect). I just can't think of a G1 'Con who you could reimagine as a carrier.

Still, it would've been really awesome to see. There's always the sequel...

I agree you know the super huge characters as mentioned except for Unicron are incredibly boring they would just show up be huge throw each other in the ocean then go away. The dinobots even though they had really stupid voices would be great in a sequel they could have came to earth millions of years ago take on dino forms and get buried when the asteroid killed the real dinosaurs then the autobots dig them up like fossils and boom you got grimlock slag and the rest. or since they have the allspark just build them themselves just like the show and give them life.

Well here we have it. The beginnings of the G1/Non-G1 Blood Feud. It won't end well.

Bottom Line is, as much as much as those like myself consider Generation 1 the Alpha and Omega of Transformers Lore, there are plenty of those that did not grow up with G1, and thus view it as archaic and cheezy. I can sympathize, because I can remember the first Batman movie, and even the first Spider-Man movie, and they are both INCREDIBLY Dated. Still, G1 has the largest variety of characters, character types, and overall substance to it... But it still came up short in a lot of places. Other series have come about to make up for the Shortcomings of the original 80's cartoon. An example, Tidal Wave would be a much better choice for an aircraft carrier(Michael Bay always was all about HUGE elements in his movies) than Broadside, unless they handled him correctly. But then again, Broadside never really had much character to speak of, did he? They could always do something totally out of left-field and call him Omega Supreme...

As for seeing other Non-G1 characters and names in the movies, it WILL happen, and I'll just deal with it. Like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, Bay's Transformers ties together many elements from many of the different Transformers Universes; it is simply the best approach. I only hope the focus stays on building up a G1-based story. If there was no G1, none of this would have came about so successfully.

End of Speech.

I wanted to bring this up here.

"IGN, being cynical cretins by nature, questioned why Bay thought Transformers wasn't a toy movie since, last we checked, it's about a line of toys and was created with support from Hasbro - a toy manufacturer.

"Transformers is essentially a movie based around a line of toys - but there's a lot of violence and mature content in the film aimed presumably at adults. Was it hard to strike a balance?"

Suddenly, the charming smile slipped from Bay's face and things went very quiet. He didn't lose his composure, but we definitely hit a nerve of some kind - pride, maybe?"

Very interesting. :-? Any thoughts?

I grew up with G1 and while I don't neccessarily consider it archaic and cheesy I am definitely ready for something new. I don't see why anyone would want different incarnations of the same characters over and over and over again. I've had enough G1. I really felt like the Classics line was a nice way to cap off that whole era, it was a great homage, now time for something new. I'm sorry, I know you guys think that TF's has to follow certain rules and blah blah blah but I'd really like to see a TF series with absolutely NO G1 characters at all, not even Prime. At the heart of TF's we have good characters, you don't have to have Prime to have a strong leader and you don't have to have Starscream to have a cunning villian.

I would prefer it if Broadside was not in a flick, 'cause frankly he's a boring character. He's a triple changer who's afraid of BOTH water AND flying. It's no wonder the G1 cartoon never featured him except as "voiceless character in background #50"

I'm not sure if you understood what I was saying, phenotype. I was agreeing with you- mostly. Prime and Megatron really do define the Transformers as a mythos; not having them in a series would be like driving a car in the desert without a radiator. Besides, there are Hundreds, if not thousands of characters in the G1 universe to choose from. There could be a lot done to focus on them in a good story.

BTW, Transformers Victory and Zone are great examples of non-Prime-centric Series. And they're DEFINITELY part of the G1 Lore.

Like I said so long ago: I dislike the robot designs* but Michael Bay will make a great action movie with a decent plot.

As far as the G1 vs. Non-G1 argument goes, I sort of think back to The Batman, the newer 'toon on Kids WB. A lot of people, who grew up with the wonderful Timm/Dini series didn't like the new series, because of its radical departures(sounds familiar?). A really great point was made by a member on those forums: "Hey, we had OUR Batman, and no one can take it away from us. Why not let the new generation have THEIR Batman?"

The TF series I've really enjoyed(Beast Wars, Cybertron/Galaxy Force) have created their own universe, then let the past inform and deepen that universe. G1 will always be a huge part of Transformers, and I hope Hasbro will always keep it around in some way, shape or form. But think about the original notion that Beast Wars was going to be a direct continuation, with Prime being Primal, who would have been a King Kong sized ape. That would have bombed. Instead, we got a great series because Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio made the characters their own, and then let the G1 influence come later.

And as far as that goes, I've decided. The aircraft carrier should TOTALLY be Waspinator.

Whoa Now fella....too much!!! I think and Air craft carrier would be way too big and be way too unbelievable for a transformer, besides, its not a very good alt to do..I hate air craft carriers.. even a Submarine would be way too big.. i know gestalts are huge and there are lots of other huge ass transformers, but lets focus the movies on the core characters, like for instance hoist, rumble, sideswipe, sunstreaker, silver streak, prowl, soundwave, shockwave, insecticons, and maybe throw a little Skyfire, and Ultra magnus in there..

not sure about the Dinobots, though good characters, just not sure..But I would love to see a fully functional Devastator though!! I think one step at a time, baby steps...like in Spiderman 3, the whole giant sandman thing was kinda way out of the ordinary, though completely cheesy and unbelievable, it wouldn't have worked as well, had they stuck it in Spiderman 2..lets inch up to giant transformers...

its like a good relationship, if you take it slow it lasts longer, then if you jump in, gun a blazing and ruin the whole build up and get to know you effect, and I'm speaking in terms of the mass populace getting to know transformers, and not discounting it as outlandish..I personally want this new fledgling franchise to succeed and make it to 5 like Michael bay would want to see.. so for me, keep the Air craft carrier and giant Uber transformers aside.. lets get that core story and minor characters some screen time..then we can delve into pure fantastical fantasy with giant air craft carriers and such...

I do think there should be a triple changer, and a car carrier in the future of the movie, but not an aircraft carrier TF, at least, I'm not having good ideas with it.

It would be interesting that in each film a different generation gets its focus. He's done G1, maybe BW somehow? (Dinobots have already been mentioned), BM? RID? Any of the Unicron Trilogy? This carrier being Tidal Wave would fit it as a U.T reference

HELLO HELLO I am only 21 original G1 watchers have at the very least 10 years on me. I am from the beast wars era and guess what, it suct! one time they had an episode where rinox farted through the whole thing he ate some berrys that gave him gas it was so retarded. G1 was the best it beats everything the voices were better the charaters had more personallity it simply was better have you ever even listened to the voices on the show Energon they all sound like they are talking through tin cans its horrible it sucks. I was so pumped when the classics line dropped it was the bomb! the movie line is disappointing I bought a couple of movie figures and they are not as good I have barricade and brawl they are lame figures. G1 Forever!!!! as for new charaters yeah i am all about that but do it in the G1 fashion unless you like those neon colored and tin can voiced transformers...yuk

Good Post!

Bay's a warmonger, thats why the military likes working with him, he makes war glamorous. Depending on the news you read, we (US) have plans on being in the middle east for decades.

The MPAA originally rated the movie 'R', until Speilberg got involved and he said he got it down to a 'PG-13'.

Most parents nowadays remember the PG-13 movies from when they were growing up and figure that this rating would make it ok for children under 13 to see.

Let's see: a long war, minimal adult support for it, recruitment is down, TF makes the military look fun, it's rated so children will see it and have heroic impressions of military service...

For those that didn't catch on above:Uncle Sam gives Bay full access to make a flick that would attract the next generation of bullet-catchers to join in the never ending 'War of Terror'.

That is why I despise American culture nowadays. It's not culture, it's propaganda. Wake Up People!

I'd put money down that the name wouldn't be either Tidal Wave or Broadside- it'll be Devastator; that just seems to be the way things are going in this series. It would be a great way to bring in the Dinobots/Dynobots however; a special crack commando Autobot team brought in specifically to deal with a giant Decepticon carrier-bot. It also would potentially serve as a base for the 'cons and could be a way to bring in the Seekers too.

As for G1 vs non-G1...grow up people! Both have their positives and negatives. The G1 is the most endearing, but was cheesy and had way too many characters. The new series are cheesy and have way too much human influence. Beast Wars was a new idea, but some of the ideas and storylines were too complicated for the target audience. Beast Machines was the same...nothing is perfect, just preferred. Neither is better than the other. They're all fun. So please just grow up...please?

Carriers are too vulnerable to attacks by supersonic warriors. If they're going to make one, it should have some kind of defence, like going underwater like a submarine, being really fast like a speedboat, being super stealthy or having a big force field.

Or it could just be made of the same stuff as the other Transformers and be able to take a monumental beating before breaking down.

And as for the transformation...imagine Tidal Wave transforming while people, transformers and everything are on top of it! It would be like Shadow of the Colossus, and the camera work alone on it would be intense. Maybe a little nauseating, but intense.

No. Just, No. We may not like our government, But the TFs have been fighting since BEFORE the War on Terror. This is not a new concept. It's the root of what we know. It's a conflict. A well known conflict, but one that works when trying to tell a story.

Just cause there's a parrelell there doesn't mean it's correct or neccecary to use it.

The movie's out in the UK on the 27th because that's the first day of the English school holidays. That the Scottish school holidays start several weeks earlier is apparently immaterial.

I would totally support larger TFs/bases as time goes on. I was imagining Omega Supreme as a 747 just the other day, in fact. Of course, we could abandon all hope of ever getting figures that were in-scale.

A "carrier" bot doesn't necessarily have to be obnoxiously huge. Besides, the whole concept is it's a "war" being fought and adapted to "our world." In the real world, we use carriers. They seem to be rather useful IMO. In regards to their usefulness to TFs, well, not every Decepticon or Autobot has the ability to fly from one end of the globe to the other...
