I'd love to make it a little more movie accurate in robot mode. Maybe remove the "mandibles" on the shoulders, and the planet parts on the sides of the legs. Not much of a modder though. It was hard enough to muster the courage to replace the smokestacks on my Hasbro 20th Anniversary Masterpiece Optimus Prime

I'm sorry for that, but it just peeves me to no end the constant re-use of this fragile mold. Is it so hard to make a new one? Well guess what hasbro? Are you listening? TF Prime's got Unicron on the way! You HAVE To make a new mold of him! I swear, If unicron pops up in TF Prime and looks JUST like THIS for design's sake, I'll camp outside of Hasbro's main executive office building for the rest of my life until we get more than new paint and a new head!

Thanks a lot!
The toy is waaaay cheaper than I expected... hopefully you recall correctly.

I mostly agree with you. I agree that this version is boring and done to death. To me it's the pinnacle as to Hasbro's efforts they will put towards this character toy wise and won't release a whole new mold anytime soon.
If they did.....the new mold i would want them to release would be the G1 prototype that never saw the light of day at retail complete with Orson Wells sound bytes. That thing is SPECTACULAR in my opinion.
As for Prime getting a Unicron? That's yet to be seen and I bet it wouldn't be supreme class either. I'm happy with the armada one i have anyways. I wouldn't shell out another 80 bucks for another supreme Unicron.
Unless it's the G1 version

The price puts me in a dilemma. I want both MP Rodimus Prime and Unicron, and I'm going state-side in October. It's one or the other....

I'd like to see comparason pics as well to see if it warrants yet another purchase. I agree that I think I probably like Takara's better, but had I known this was coming, I probably woulda skipped dishing out $150 for that version and just went with this instead. While Takara's is most likely better, it isn't anywhere near $90 better.

But yes, at around 60 bucks this is a must ye. Not so much the 150 for the Takara version. Though package was very cool.

Right through here in the other Unicron thread, I already provided a link to TFW2005, who showed some pictures of the three orange Unicrons...

I don't know what or who to believe anymore about the LED color for the eyes. One thread says that Hasbro said they will glow green. Another thread shows an in-hand toy's eyes glowing red.
WTF? Can we get a definitive answer on this or not FFS?
If they still glow red and there is no pictorial tutorial on how to switch them out, I will NOT be buying.

Unicron will only be sold via Amazon.com so unless you're staying for a while, it'd be tough to pick that one up in person. Rodimus Prime, on the other hand, depends on whether or not they're on the shelves.

QFT!
Had I known this was coming I'd have saved the $$$ on Takara Unicron. But as this is pretty reasonably priced for such a large figure, and an exclusive to boot, I'll probably pick him up.

Toys 'R Us is just a town away, and I'm staying for 3 weeks at the very least. Plus, my in-laws who I'll be staying with still have part of my haul from last year. So I'm covered

This is the better version, with darker colors. The Takara version had a variety of paint problems most noticeable with the wings and the face. I went through four that all had varying levels of paint chips on each of their faces. Hopefully the face paint problem is resolved with this version.

Can we get some images side by side sometime soon? I'm still stuck on weather I should pick this one up or not. I shall maintain and not open my Takomy Unicron, but I just need some more pics if not now soon.

This image clearly shows the other big issue that I had with the Takara version which was the horrible "racing" stripe he had down the middle of his chest that ignored the molded lines. The Hasbro version follows the molded lines which makes it look more natural and not just an added on paint stripe.
I can't clearly tell in this pic, but it looks like the "light up" hand is a similar shade of gray/silver as the left hand.

No sense in getting upset. There's a Unicron out there for everyone now.
Though...this many re-releases so quick after one another is getting a little...

Looking at the other pics, and the ones at tfw2005 from the link kindly provided by alldarker, it looks like the hand is a darker smokier gray plastic than the Takara, closer to the Original Armada hand, perhaps to more closely resemble the other hand when not lit up, however it seems to still be translucent to some degree.

True, I don't like the plain stripe and the glass hand, however I must say that the drybrush look to Takara Unicron makes him look much better than the Amazon version, if they were to use that technique on the Amazon version, it would be the best ever. However they did not, so that's a bummer...Seibertron wrote:Sabrblade wrote:NOTE: Image not mine.

This is making me wish I didn't have the Armadacron, then again, I still love Armadacron anyway, the idea of a planet turning into a robot is so awesome to me, and i love having the toy.

If indeed necessary, switching the LED in Unicron's head from red to green is relatively easy, if you are handy with a soldering iron and have a green LED available (not hard to find). The wires are very thin and easy to damage (especially when screwing his head back together), though, so you might need to replace them too (also not too hard). I also replaced the LED in his hand: ecqually easy to do.

This and MP Rodimus are why I'm glad that I can't afford the Japanese releases. MP Grimlock too, although I hadn't quite learned my lesson yet and got the Takara version.

Someone from Hasbro apparently said they would glow green in the final version, and that previous in-hand one was a test shot with red LEDs instead. Who knows if this is fact...
But why is it so important? It's not like you can display it with the eyes lit up, you'd kill the battery pretty quick. If the figure is otherwise a purchase, I don't understand why wrong-colored LED eyes is a dealbreaker. A lot of people take the batteries out to protect the figure from corrosion anyway.
If it's really that big a deal, switching them out shouldn't be that hard, but you will need to have soldering skills to disconnect the red LEDs and replace them with green. If you're not confident that you can do this, I wouldn't attempt it.

I much prefer the Takara Grimlock. Sharper Teeth, pointy sword, and sharp claws (again, keeping in mind that I painted the sword fiery orange). Other than the crown, MP takara Grimlock is superior. Worth the price difference? to me it was, but probably not for everyone.

Well to be fair it was a gift, but I feel bad it cost so much when the Hasbro one came out soon after. I ended up getting the 3rd Party crown for it, and I never use the other accessories. Dulled tips don't bother me, so I would've gladly bought the Hasbro one if I didn't already have the Takara one.

The other accesories do suck (on the takara version)... Although I'm thinking about taking a few pics of a buncha TFs all holding glasses looking drunk of their @$$. Send me that stein mug if you don't need it
I heard the crown sucks... not sure which one, but I think it was the one that came with the Hasbro version... barely stayed on, I heard.
