It's the holiday season, and we here at Seibertron.com are gearing up for it. That's not to say we've forgotten you the people! As an early Christmas gift, Seibertron.com adds a big gallery for the little guys: it's the newly released Masterpiece MP-21 Bumblebee and Exo-Suit Daniel Witwicky! Thirty years after his debut, Bumblebee finally receives an officially-licensed, fully faithful update, and features a face-changing gimmick, including a neutral face, a smiling face, and, if you were lucky to have preordered from Amazon Japan, a battle mask that homages his original Generation One toy. Packed with Bumblebee is Daniel Witwicky in the futuristic Exo-Suit that was used prominently throughout the original 1986 animated film and the space opera that was Season Three-onward. Check out our preview images below, and if you would like to see the full galleries, click either the links or the images to be taken to them!

Hasui said that the Witwicky in the exosuit is Spike (スパイク.)
I think they dropped the ball on this. I'm assuming the intention was to have this be Spike. That would make the most sense since Bumblebee and Spike were always together in g1 and the animated movie. But the face and hair sculpt sure looks like Daniel plus the image used in the instructions is 100% Daniel. Someone can say Spike all they want but it certainly looks like daniel. If hasui is the designer someone should tell me if he wanted that to be spike they should've done a better job with the head sculpt, called the product "Spike Witwicky Exo-Suit Ver." And used an image of Spike in Exo suit from Headmasters (I'm assuming they don't have rights to usage of imagery from animated film for some reason).
If the instructions or box specifically call the product Spike in Japanese, I'll change it but if it's something from Twitter it stays how it is.

It seems like imagery from the Animated film is rarely used in the past few years, specifically since Paramount obtained rights to it. In the US, that's because Paramount owns the rights to it currently so they could block it from being released because they apparently felt that it would confuse the marketplace with the live action movies (doesn't make any sense to me). I think the Australian Madman Blu-Ray release was the last time that it was available so I wonder if it has now been somehow restricted worldwide. My speculation could be running wild here ... just something I've noticed.
I changed the gallery to Spike but I still stand by my opinion of it. The sideburns and facial proportions are that of Daniel and not Spike. Daniel has the smaller triangle sideburns like this toy has whereas Spike has the longer rectangle sideburns that go the length of his ears. Also, the face is round like the boy Daniel instead of a more "chisled"/longer adult face like adult Spike has. They can call it Spike all they want, but that's Daniel's face/head (and the instructions seem to back this up as well with the picture of Daniel in it and a picture of Spike nowhere to be seen).

Ah. Good catch. That, plus the fact that shots of Magnus's packaging state that he's coming with a figure of Daniel. This Exo-Suit is Spike, Daniel comes with Magnus and younger Spike came with MP-10, so all we're missing is a Carly and a Chip Chase.

That's Bug Bite from Tonka's Gobots. He's a so-called Super Gobot, larger than normal Gobots, but his transformation is a standard one used by half of the Supers. Thanks to Hasbro buying out Tonka in the 1990's, the Bug Bite character could be used for BotCon 2007 as a white repaint of Classics Bumblebee, based on one of e-Hobby's G1 Gobots:
By the by, pretty interesting that Gobots Bug Bite is practically the same size as MP Bumble in vehicle mode.

Would Paramount's hold in the movie in the U.S. extend to Japanese markets as well, though? To my understanding (though it could be wrong), ownership rights of American material mightn't affect those in foreign markets that already have their own versions of the material. Paramount might be keeping the American version of the movie out of the American market, but what's to stop Toei from putting out a new domestic (for Japan) DVD release of the Japanese audio version of the movie that neither Hasbro nor Paramount ought to have any ownership of? If Toei wanted to, that is. Would Paramount step in and object to a foreign release that would otherwise ignore the English-language markets that Paramount's been trying to keep that movie out of?Seibertron wrote:It seems like imagery from the Animated film is rarely used in the past few years, specifically since Paramount obtained rights to it. Maybe someone goofed up and based it on the wrong visual reference. They might have used that The Headmasters screengrab of Daniel in the transformed Exo-Suit that we see in the instructions and mistook it for Spike. Who knows. *shrug*Seibertron wrote:I changed the gallery to Spike but I still stand by my opinion of it. The sideburns and facial proportions are that of Daniel and not Spike. I'm switching it back to Daniel. The toy's head is clearly Daniel. The line-art in the Masterpiece book that came out a few months back is Daniel as well. The prototype in that book appears to have the head of Spike oddly. I'll post scans in a few minutes so you guys can see the difference in Spike and Daniel's heads in the exo-suit.
The guys over at the Wiki also seem to agree: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Bumblebee_(G1)/toys#Masterpiece

Only thing I can guess is that Hasui might have planned for it to be Spike, but somewhere along the way somebody else didn't get that exact memo, got working on the Exosuit, remembered that Daniel was seen in it more than his father was, thought that's who it was supposed to be, and made Daniel instead.
Though, this does raise the question of whether they'll try again with giving us an actual Spike from this toy in some later release. Maybe either with a variant release of Bumble or with a completely different figure.

Is changing it Daniel really a good idea though? The fact that the instructions clearly state it's Spike would make things final no matter what people may think he actually is. You may think it's Daniel, TakaraTomy claim it's Spike. In the interest of being factually accurate with the site, which side takes priority? The evidence does point to him being designed originally as Daniel, I'll give you that. but the name given, eh... I agree with Sabrblade here that TakaraTomy made a Galaxy Goofup.
Keeping the name Spike, but at the same time acknowledging the sculpt to be based on Daniel would be the way to go IMHO. Keep both sides of the argument ("It's Spike, the instructions say so" vs. "It's Daniel, look at the sculpt!") appeased.

Not sure where it says in the instructions that it's Spike, but regardless the picture shown is that of Daniel. I can't read Japanese but I can certainly look at an image in the instructions to see that it's clearly Daniel, I can look at the officially licensed Takara Masterpiece book to see that the line-art is Daniel, and I can look at the toy itself to clearly see that it's Daniel. Maybe it's just the artist in me that notices shapes and subtle differences even in something so vague, I dunno, but it's definitely Daniel and not the adult version of Spike.

I wondered something like that, myself. The text エクセルスートのスパイクも変形。 basically translates to saying "Spike's Excel Suit also transforms." But the parsing of it as "Spike's Excel Suit" (as in "Ekuseru Suuto no Supaiku") could be a reference to how the suit worn by Daniel in the movie belonged to his father. So even though it's "Spike's Exo-Suit", it's still Daniel who's wearing it.Seibertron wrote:Also, are we sure that it doesn't say something like "Daniel is wearing Spike's Exo-Suit" or "Spike built the Exo-Suit". As for whether or not Daniel's name is mentioned anywhere on the box, the entirety of the text on the whole box is a bit small for me to tell (even in the biggest images), but if Daniel's name is mentioned anywhere, it would look like this:

I looked all over but "Daniel" isn't mentioned anywhere. Then again, I also considered the possibility that "Spike's Exo-Suit" could be viewed as "Exo-Suit built by Spike". That could mean that TakaraTomy intended the fans to decide who he actually is as the focus is more on the suit itself rather than the one piloting it. Japanese is like any language that way...

So, I guess that's it. Daniel's not mentioned, the toy's only called "Exo-Suit", the one reference to Spike might just be a reference to how the suit belonged to him, but it's still very much Daniel's noggin inside the thing.

This all leads me back to my original theory that I think it's odd that Takara hasn't used imagery from the Animated movie in a while (at least not that I've noticed, someone please correct me if I'm wrong). It'll be interesting to see what cartoon images they use for Ultra Magnus since the "mouth opened" face should be the Matrix holding pose from the Animated Movie. If they refrain from using imagery from the Animated movie, I'm going to stick with my theory that for some reason they can't use imagery from that source currently (which I'm assuming ties back to Paramount absurdly preventing its release here in the US).

In the MP Magazine, the art used looks a lot like Daniel alright so I'm guessing this was Exo suit ver. 1 with Daniel being intended as the pilot. Kind of confusing and yet accurate(?). That or Tomy don't have fact checkers like Sabrblade and stovokor
As for major booboos, MP-01 and MP-08 had the "More than Meets TEH Eye" fonts so this isn't quite a surprise.

I can't give a specific quote from anyone official, but apparently (or so I've been told) Paramount bought the rights to the Animated movie shortly after the 2006 Sony DVD release. Maybe someone can find some documents from all of these Sony hacks that sheds some light on this supposed transaction between Paramount and Sony for the rights to the 1986 Animated Transformers film. The story goes that Paramount felt that having the animated movie available at retail would cause confusion in the marketplace with their live-action Transformers films. That sounds absurd to me, but maybe big wigs at Paramount just see the title of the movies on paper and think that a cartoon and a live action movie could somehow be confusing. I dunno. Like I said, sounds absurd, but since we haven't seen the animated movie released on DVD in the US in 8 years it seems more and more plausible to me.
Does anyone know of a website where you can look up who owns the rights to a movie? Hasbro seemed to be able to air the animated movie (albeit the British or Canadian version) on television via the Hub Network so it seems that Paramount is not able to block that for some reason.
Shout! Factory's rights extend to non-feature length Transformers titles only (which means this would exclude the Animated movie).
It could be possible that the version of the story above that I was told about Paramount could be confused with whatever agreement Hasbro and Paramount made. Maybe Hasbro has the rights to it but their agreement with Paramount states that the animated movie can't be released on home media to avoid confusion (instead of Paramount buying the rights to it to block it).

The sculpt is so small, and as kin, the characters share some likeness in the first place, so it can be used as either, really.
Does anyone know what the Japanese text next to the lineart actually says? Because the ocr + translate sites are messy:

Maybe it was originally designed for Daniel but was later reworked for Spike when they decided to release Bee?
Not all the artwork in the book is finalised btw. I noticed that with Optimus Prime.
Q: did Spike ever transform in the Headmasters series?

Nope.Cyberpath wrote:Q: did Spike ever transform in the Headmasters series?
And between the two, Spike only wore it once in that series (in the same episode as Daniel wore his), while Daniel wore one five times in that show (including the time mentioned above).
Needless to say, between the movie and The Headmasters cartoon, Daniel has worn it more times than his father and, evidently, has become more associated with it in Japan than his father.

(Kind of like how they used a screen capture of Bluestreak-coloured-as-Prowl to illustrate the shoulder canons feature in Prowl's instructions.)
Personally, I'd have used a screen cap of Spike to avoid confusion. (But pretty cool that it can be used as either.)

As far as the packaging is concerned, the toy's official identity is "Exo-Suit".shajaki wrote:has the great spike/daniel debacle of 2014 come to an end?

On my end it has. Daniel it is until takara releases something that contradicts this (ie release an official daniel Exo suit with another toy) or publishes something official to the contrary.

Aw, wish I had Takara's Arcee now, there's a photo that I would have liked to do:
"Exosuit" in the middle, with Bumblebee and Arcee to his sides, each pulling on one of his arms possessively, with the caption: "He's Spike! No, he's Daniel!"
