Your opinion is wrong.

The movie kicked ass.

Thousands of Transformers fans at BotCon and around the world are in support of my statement (See above).

Millions of dollars have been made in like, oh, two days, which also goes a long way to saying your opinion is wrong.

Credit where credit is due.

Bay made an excellent movie and did the Transformers modern day justice.

Ok, completely from someone studying scriptwriting and filmaking's perspective, throwing out that I loved Transformers.

One of my favorite writers in TV/Movies today is the guy who did the recent Battlestar Galactica. They recently had a kind of convention for people studying to be screenwriters and movie makers. They had a panel of successful directors, writers etc. The writer of BSG was one of them.

For being someone that I wanted to hear a lot from. He actually had very little to say at all. (brace yourself, some might consider this mildly offensive.)

"Don't be a whore."

That is all he said. He then passed the microphone on to someone else.

It took me a while to think about what he meant. But in situations like this, the "whores" of the movie industry as far as Director's and script writers are guilty of a major sin that should not be tolerated from any quality movie.

1. The first thing to hit the cutting room floor, is character development. They excuse this basically by saying that they want to sell it to your average shallow person.

2. They spend more time and effort on speacial effects then quality of acting. This was very true with the recent Star Wars Prequels. Episode 1 was fairly solid. The actors began to get lazy as the series progressed. In comparision to the intensity of the previous three movies, the characters where only important because they where "Anakin Skywalker" not because they had any real depth. And any depth that they did have, we had to bring to the theatre with us.

3. The plot as it develops is not clearly defined. It does not move smoothly from one part to another. This sort of thing generally passes by unoticed to that "Shallow Person" who is often targeted for their money. But to an intelligient person, it is pretty clear.

Now, all of these things do lead to initially successful movies. And that is why the "whore" mentality is so prominent. They want the pay off that comes from the first three years after release. They want instant gratification, and money NOW.

The Star Wars Trilogy did not get to be the phenomenon that it is by doing this. Nor did the original Batman movie. (It is also what the Batman sequels completely lacked, that Batman Begins recaptured) The Batman sequels basically based their hope for success entirely on the Batman name, and the fact that the first one was such a Hollywood sensation. (I feel this is also true about Episode 2 and 3 in the Star wars Series.)

The new Transformers movie has hope. And they can make up for it in the sequels. They are teetering on the edge. If Bay makes the right decisions in the sequels, this line can be saved. If he goes the other route and takes the easy and initially profitable path, Transformers will fade back to the cult following that it was before this movie.

If he wants to direct, fine. Just cut the goddamn shakycam already! What the hell's the point of having such detailed characters if you can't even see them fighting clearly?

Hire a good writer. A GOOD ONE. Like Bob Forward, or at least someone who understands the concept of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. There's more to a film than special effects and "XTREEEEM A-SPLOZIONS!!eleveteen" And for Christ's sake, enough with the freakin US patriotism/propaganda and product placement, already!

And don't give me that 'uh but teh crat00nz is N07 teh lyk dis lulz' crap. This ISN'T a cartoon, it's a major motion picture event. Do it right!

The same could be said of Episode 1 when it came out. But now that time has passed and reality has sunk in, not even the most die-hard fan can justify Jar Jar.

I realized after showing that post to someone, that I forgot to mention the things to do right.

You should care about the characters. They should be real to you. This is the contrast.

Jazz in the cartoon was a hero. He had a definite personality.

The movie version of Jazz dies, people barely notice.

Irohide dying was a huge blow to any transformers fan.

If the Ironhide of this movie died, I don't think anyone would of noticed. People like us who care about transformers would. For the same reason that it was compelling to watch "Obi-Wan vs Anakin" in Episode 3. That's Anakin Skywalker! Darth Vader!

Even though Aiden Christenson's rendition of Anakin made you want to pimp slap him. He came off as a total crybaby. Even with him being a Jedi and having a lightsaber, he is about as intimidating as a 2 year hold having a temper tantrum. Nobody would of ever entertained the notion of pimp slapping Darth Vader.

Optimus Prime is the major light of this movie. He is the only character that was at least a shadow of himself.

I can. It was an alien species from the gungan planet that spoke in a manner other than what we are used to seeing. Plain and simple. Not everything has to be so complex that it riddles the mind.

"bay didnt write the script, bay has nothing to do with the underdevelopment of characters"

This is not true. The Director decides what gets cut. Along with the Producers to some degree.

I have rarely seen a Scriptwriter pleased with the end resault of what happens to a movie after the time limit of how long a movie is allowed to be gets imposed.

"You mean this batman movie?"

No, I mean the movie with Micheal Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

But that movie was accurate to what the comic book was like at the time.

THat was pretty much my only issue.

But again, wel, for me atleast, maybe it was cheaper to make that sorta shot then it was to show a longer, or bigger scene of them fighting (even if Bay does like to shoot stuff like that)

Still though, I wanted to see more full bot on bot action, not just someones fist and someones chest plate or something.. haha.. but oh well. In the end I don't care. I just wanted to see Ironhide transform.

I tottally agree with Briggs. The action was almost impossible to keep track of. Some people think this lead to a "Wow, so much action" reaction.

Instead it makes you think "What the hell just happend? Am I in a bottle?"

Madness?... THIS IS SPARTA!!

Seriously, like Seibs said a couple of days ago, anyone who thinks that Transformers exist for another reason except to make money is sadly mistaken. So they would never take something serious that's doing fine as it is.

Ohhhh I don't know if I agree with that. I can look at each movie autobot and see STRONG resemblances in characterization to their G1 counterparts (which mind you, they didn't HAVE to do, but they did, and i assume they did it for us, as we are the only people who are going to remember that Ironhide was headstrong, Ratchet was a nerd, Bumblebee was heroic and hung out with spike, and Jazz was mr smooth cool guy who didnt have much to do with actual *jazz*, but with whatever music was cool in that decade)

In the end, to each his own i suppose.

So, if one movie is good, future movies aren't allowed to improve?

What you said really has no relevance. I'd love it if Transformers 2 or 3 was better than 1. Why shouldn't I?

That wouldn't mean that the first movie didn't rock as well.

How many times have you EVER heard Irohide ask permission to kill a human in G1? This was probably the most glaring difference for me. I remember opening my mouth saying "what?" when I heard that. His voice didn't suit him either. Irohide was like the drill seargeant of the Autobots.

Bumblebee was never a good fighter at all. Yet in this movie he did great.

Jazz was a great fighter. And he got taken out like a mosquitio. Jazz also had tons of cool and usually useful things to say. This Jazz was barely noticeable.

Ratchet was pretty much dead on.

Oh.... and one more thing.

Ratchet was not a Nerd. He was a doctor.

Perceptor was the Nerd. :)

I was as much a skeptic of Bay's ability to direct Transformers as the next guy, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised, and left the theatre on opening night with a big smile on my face, with that alone he has earned the right to direct another.

If Transformers goes on to become another one of these Hollywood trilogies, it would be good - in terms of style and presentation - to keep the same director throughout. You start changing things around and, well, you end up with X-Men 3...

... 'nuff said.

No what I think he's saying is people liked Episode 1 at first but now realize what a crapfest it was.

Transformers is definitely at maximum hype right now. Give it about 10 years and people will be digging into it like they're doing the 1986 movie now.

I also think I like the 86 movie more than this one, though I really liked this new one. There was no characterization in the robots. Overall I think the 86 movie had memorable moments like Megatron vs. Prime, whereas this one had some holy sh*t moments but never anything that would really stand out. Hopefully the sequels do better with this. But then again I saw the 86 movie before I ever saw the cartoon and I thought that Prime entrance and death scene was the coolest thing ever, and I had no idea who he was.

Basically if they're going to keep going for the human element over the robots, we're not really going to care for any of the transformers themselves. But the way this movie ended it seems like they may switch the perspective for a sequel.

Bay did a great job on this film. The critics are being way too harsh. Expectations for some were very unrealistic. Face it, no matter who made this movie people would have a problem and find fault in it. I hope he does the second film.

CP being right or Prime getting his ass handed to him? I'll go with the former, cuz the latter just isn't true.

Prime would have one had Hot Rod gotten in the way. And he still had enough in him to send Megs flying off in broken shambles to a delighted Starscream.

So while I normally agree with you on these posts, I can't now.

What we need in the next one is either let some one else direct but still have bay on hand or let bay do the next and then let some one else direct so we can see who does it better. Bay did a good job on this one. Could've been better but it could've been a lot worse to. But i would like to see some one else take a shot at it. A good director though. Not that moron who fraked up Resident Evil and AVP or the idiot who did Blood Rayne. A real Director.

here's a thought, get a director who actually knows about tf's or even is a fan and will listen to the longtime and very knowledgeable fanbase instead of just trying to change every freaking thing that made them great just to put their own stamp on things. if this doesn't happen then hopefully there will be a remake of some kind in the future like they're doing with the hulk and batman flicks. the bottomline is i'm hoping this "version" is one and done.

I'd like to disagree. As a fan it was an embarrassment. As a non-fan, it was fun but otherwise completely forgettable, like any other Michael Bay movie. It has ZERO repeat viewing potential. In less than five years it will be in the $5.88 bin at Wal-Mart like Godzilla. In ten years, it will be remembered as something botched to compare other possible movie botches to, like Godzilla. It is, in essence, a Michael Bay movie — disposable pop like a Britney Spears song. Ultimately, I'd rather watch the 1986 movie than this one more time.

Now Granted, he was probably needed to do do a movie of this magnitude, but please, oh God, PLEASE let's get better writers in for the sequel. I want to see character development and a lot more screen time for the robots to develop their personalities. Their characterizations were written in almost as an afterthought. In fact, the Transformers were written in almost as an afterthought, and the movie was NAMED AFTER THEM. And it would be nice if their voices weren't all almost exactly alike.

I know this isn't the movie review thread, but I was holding out hope that this would be something good and I was sorely disappointed, and I wanted to respond to the gripes presented in this thread specifically.

He wasn't shutting down until the blast with the gun, courtesy of Hot Rod's interference. If he were shutting down, he wouldn't have been able to stand up. Yeah, Megatron didn't die either, but Megatron cannot be killed. He hasn't been killed in any continuity except for the new movie — ooh, another plot hole! The closest he's ever come was being reformatted at the hands of a dark god.

Yeah, he was cut, but I distinctly recall him throwing megs about a block away then casually walking to his cannon to make Megs a smoldering pile of deceptitrash. At no point did he faulter in his speech or give the impression he was hurting PRIOR to Megs blasting the crap outta him.

This is exactly the reaction I was refering to.

The abercrombie and fitch young adults and teenagers who just took their girlfriends to the movies will be happy with this movie.

But if Bay doesn't do something serious with the sequels, this post's description of this film's fate is well put.

bay done a terrific job on transformers; i know for certain that alot of us fans loved the movie. eventhough it wasn't like g1 to some of the fans but hey g1 was the 80's. i'm not knocking off the orginal so please don;t think that i am but come on we got what we honestly wanted. micheal bay knew what most of the fans wanted for the movie and it worked really great together. I truelly hope that bay does do the other sequels since hasbro and us fans put some positive and even some negetive feedback into the production of this movie. if it weren't for us and hasbro bay would made this movie even much weirder. i for one am proud of transformers and of bay. so everyone that bitches about bay stating that they ruined his childhood well too bad he just made mine a hell of a lot better.

Yeah, he was cut, but I distinctly recall him throwing megs about a block away then casually walking to his cannon to make Megs a smoldering pile of deceptitrash. At no point did he faulter in his speech or give the impression he was hurting PRIOR to Megs blasting the crap outta him.

Before he threw megs, he got hit with the saber and was reeling back, and after got his gun he was severly winded and sounded like he was in "pain" from fighting.

Ultimately, I'd rather watch the 1986 movie than this one more time."

This is exactly the reaction I was refering to.

The abercrombie and fitch young adults and teenagers who just took their girlfriends to the movies will be happy with this movie.

But if Bay doesn't do something serious with the sequels, this post's description of this film's fate is well put.

godzilla was the exact same movie that came to mind for me as well

Wow, another movie thread down the toilet.

How did a Bay interview turn into a "movie sucks" vs. "movie rocks" war with an 86 film argument on the side?

Overall, I loved the movie, and I hope that they can make the sequel even better. They'll have more room for action and character development and plot now that the introduction has been covered.

I dunno about that one. If he was hurt, he wouldn't have been able to toss Megs like a little rag doll, then walk over to his gun like nada.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point, but all in all, he still put up w better fight than in the live action movie.

Very carefully and with extreme precision

I'm falling in line with Buttz on this topic.

With that said, after reading the article there was one thing that really stuck me: Bay is tied up tight with this movie. He practically designed these robot/aliens, he pushed their redesigns and got them to look the best he could on camera, albeit through those who design and manage this technology. And for that I think he did a really good job. I really like Prime, Barricade, Blackout, Bonecrusher and Bumble Bee's design. The rest are....meh. The direction was fine, but tell me a good story please!

So that's what I really hope changes for all the sequels. Please do not bring back the writers. I think Bay is capable of directing the movies, even though I find a lot of things lacking for this debut. What it lacked in some places was simply good taste, point in case:

Grandma giving the finger and then being called a B

Telling Grandma to shut up

The faux pee scene (as funny as it was still lacked, um...taste/tack)

"By the levels of pheremones in the air I think the boy wants to mate with the female" ...what are the Autobots jerks now?

"Are you masterbating!?"

"What's up little bitches?!" -Jerk!

You want my little kids to be fans of this stuff and buy the toys? First I'd have to let them see the movie.

Before I go on, things like this are just in poor taste and I think that's a reflection of the director and the writers. You know I like Transformers and I like the good parts about this movie, but there are things in there that are embarrassing and it will come to light as time passes.

Right now everyone's caught up in the excitement of a live action Transformers film finally coming out, but it can lose steam because of the director's self-centerness. I watch this film and I see Bay saying, "This is me, this is what I like, this is what I think is funny." I know, he's not the only one! But it fails to keep others in mind. After the excitement is gone people begin to chose sides and will leave if they don't like what they see. It's that simple.

I liked the movie alright. It has a few WTF moments, but it was overall okay. I just HATE Bay's attitude. And many of his designs. Mostly his attitude tho.

To Mister Bay from the mind of me,

Sorry for most of the abuse, and thanks for the great job!

Good point. Bay is a competent director. There were very few actual directoral flaws. The only problem is that he delved very heavily into the production of the movie as well. I think he suffered some rather severe lapses in judgment, primarily with the writing. The robot designs were cool; I could live with them. The writing was utterly atrocious. To an extent the director has to work within the confines of the established script, and the script was horrible. The lack of proper characterization and the major, glaring plot holes were unforgivable at best and amateur at worst. There are hundreds of better screenwriters out there, and there are dozens of better Transformers writers who were not even so much as consulted. Get Simon Furman to at least collaborate on the next movie. Failing that, I'd settle for Brad Mick who was exceptional at expemplifying the personalities with as few words as possible.

I hope so. The robots definitely need more screen time. Some of them didn't even get speaking lines, and they were all one-dimensional and sterotypical. Megatron was handled entirely wrong — not sinister, cunning, tyrannical, or militaristic at all, just a hulking angry brute.

I hope they're listening to our feedback and taking it into serious consideration. The movie is called "Transformers," not "Humans," and there are plenty of movies where the humans are the focus. They need to make the Transformers the focus.

I wouldnt think he would come back to do 2, since the only thing that got him to do the first film was Spielberg's "boy and his car" story. If he does make #2, then he is doing what he originally stated he didnt want to do, and that's make a 2.5 hour long toy commercial.

I'm still amused that Bay's best film is the one he had to almost be forced into making.
