Every two weeks, Seibertron.com brings you a Top 5 list related to all things Transformers written by me, your fellow editor. These are my opinions (just like movie or game reviews hosted by sites are still just the opinion of one person) so what matters most is what you guys think of the topic or list, and I hope to see your own lists or comments on omissions and ranking. Let's have fun! All previous lists can be found here.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was written in early January 2015.

Top 5 Celebrity voice actors in Transformers

Celebrities have lent their voice to Transformers characters in the media since the G1 era. It's always a treat regardless if it's for a few shows or just a few minutes. It's especially fun when the voice fits perfectly with the character. From Monty Python's Eric Idle to Boy Meets World's Will Friedle, we will now count down the best celebrity voice actors of all Transformers history starting with...

5. Dwayne the Rock Johnson as Cliff Jumper in Transformers Prime

Oh man, it's THE ROCK! And they totally emphasise it by using the theme of his horns referring to both the the Brahma Bull and Clifjumper's badass Prime design. Of course, a mega celeb like this could only be a guest star and this is what this role truly is even though he plays a main character of the world we are being introduced to. Using The Rock was a great way for us to fall in love with this doomed character, adding to the impact. If you don't know what I am talking about, just watch the first episode of Transformers Prime titled "Darkness Rising, Part 1".

4. Weird Al Yankovic as Wreck-Gar in Transformers Animated

Can there be a more perfect casting (yes, because this is number 4) than pairing up weird Al with this Transformers nutcase. Actually the Wreck-Gar character has had some great talent voice him, like Eric Idle. However, Weird Al tops that performance in part due to the improved speech pattern he gets to play with. He definitely helped Wreck Gar be as odd, hyper, passionate and as weird as he was supposed to be, while giving him a sweet and sympathetic side that helps from the shtick getting too annoying.

3. Orson Wells as Unicron in The Transformers Movie

This is the most solemn voice you could ever hear. It evokes power and certitude in anything it whispers and it is both the voice of the most powerful threat in Transformers history as well as the voice of the greatest filmmaker that ever lived, Orson Welles (if anyone doesn't know, at age 25 he directed "Citizen Kane" which is believed by film critics to be the best film of all time). You can't help but believe everything uttered by that voice and the fact that it speaks of tearing worlds apart can't make you see anything but doom. It was used sparingly but to amazing effect.

2. Tony Todd as Dreadwing in Transformers Prime

When I first heard Dreadwing speak, I took a step back. It was both deep and steely, it could bring a chill down your spine. And of course, it had to be by one of the scariest guys ever, Tony Todd, the Candy Man himself. His deep voice also worked with adding to the characters sense of honour, pride and determination since you knew that he meant every word he spoke. And the best part is that it doesn't take anything away from the character by being invassive or distracting. It just works. This is exactly what this no nonsense character would sound like and no one could have done a better job. But number one is kind of special...

Transformers News: Top 5 Celebrity voice actors in Transformers

1. Leanard Nimoy as Galvatron (not sentinel Prime) in The Transformers Movie

Was this too predictable? Firstly, the use of a different voice for Galvatron was very well done. It emphasised that this was a new version of the character with a new unhinged personality (think Doctor Who), and what we were comfortable with before had just flown out the window. Galvatron was more ruthless than Megatron ever was, and far more psychotic, to the point of even doublecrossing Unicron (WHO DOES THAT!?!?!). Leanard Nimoy conveys this transition perfectly, giving a great balance of power and insanity. This works so well in setting the tone of the film, and of the character, and it's also Leanard freaken Nimoy. Way to start the new age of G1 with a bang!

Transformers News: Top 5 Celebrity voice actors in Transformers

Honourable mentions: My number 5 was a hard choice between my pick and George Takei as Alpha Trion. I was so amused and surprised when I heard George Takei's unmistakable voice on the show, but that's kinda the problem. His voice was so obvious that I couldn't see Alpha Trion talking to Optimus, I just heard George Takei, hence why this guest voice wasn't the one chosen. Also, the previously mentioned Eric Idle.

I was expecting Peter Cullen to be number one. While the Transformers brand defined him, he is truly a celebrity in his own right. He definitely has more money and star power than Weird Al in the film industry. I didnt know the Rock played Cliffjumper. That was cool. Why I totally understand how Lenord Nemoys recent passing puts him in legendary status, it was really the guy who played Galvatron in the cartoon series after the 1986 movie that defined Galvatron. The happy sounding, maniac voice worked much better for the character in my opinion than Lenord Nemoys more bold, serious voiceovers. Galvatron was a unpredictable raging lunatic and the cartoon voice was perfect.

Great list with very solid choices. It shows not only the richness of actors involved in bringing all these characters to life, but the depth and complexity of the Transformers universe as well. There isn't one character on this list who isn't spot on.

I disagree. Nimoy's Galvatron was superb despite the relatively limited screentime. I hated the season 3 version that Welker voiced. Galvatron should be menacing, intimidating and imposing (fearing only Unicron) and give the sense that he really is an all-powerful almost-unstoppable being (main reason the Marvel UK version is my fave). Season 3's Galvatron just came across as a noisy ineffective idiot. One of the many reasons I really don't care for the series as a whole.

I chatted with Will about this list, and I interpreted what he means by celebrity actors as someone who is not exclusively tied to voice acting.

That would exclude Cullen, Welker and other great voices like Strong, Montano, Sobolov and the such.
It's a very good list, given its parameters. :D

Personally, I would have put Robert Stack up there for his performance as Ultra Magnus in the G1 Transformers movie. When I first heard him I was like hey, its sounds the dude from Unsolved Mysteries!

This really should have been a list of top 10, as it doesn't seem right not to have Stack and Idle, not to take away anything from the 5 listed. As far as the Nimoy/Welker Galvatron issue, while I always preferred Nimoy's version, I thought Welker's more strained voice went with the character, as I always thought that once Unicron was destroyed, Galvatron would be in a state of perpetual torture, as if he died while torturing Galvatron to coerce him into destroying Hot Rod, and be caught in a loop. This would explain the change in voice as well as the change in personality, as season 3 Galvatron was far more unhinged than, and abused his subordinates unlike movie Galvatron

My personal favorite would be Unicron without a doubt, Orson Welles' performance was spectacular. I'll always associate his voice with that character. Leonard Nimoy's Galvatron is definitely up there as well (especially compared to Season 3 Galvatron), however Orson Welles takes the cake. In fact the 1986 movie had spectacular voice acting all around.

I loved Nimoy as Galvatron... but the points that you bring up about him being mentally unstable... that wasn't really Nimoy's performance. The TF movie Galvatron is sane, powerful, and (more importantly) still, at heart, Megatron. Galvatron wanted to protect Cybertron, yet it was clear that Unicron was planning on eating Cybertron... after all, he kept munching on its moons! When Galvatron found out that there was one object that Unicron feared, he went out, and got it--to save Cybertron (to be fair, it wasn't that altruistic... he was ruler there, so that's where all his stuff was  ). Furthermore, even after he was swallowed, he was still willing to team up with the Autobots to destroy Unicron, but Unicron blasted his brain so hard he was forced to fight--it was probably there that Galvatron went insane, as he was being forced to do something he really didn't want to do.

While I understand where your coming from, I feel Nimoys Galvatron voice was just another rendition of Megatron. Kind of Bland. It was Welkers voiceover that really made his voice unique. He sounded happy while still maintaining an evil demeanor (almost like starscream) which really worked for the character which was clearly insane unlike Megatron. I could not see the Nimoy voice being used successfully on the episode where Galvatron was sent for therapy on planet Torkulon. It just doesnt sound insane enough to me. I think Nimoys star trek status is making him seem like the better voice when in reality that is very debatable.

Great list.

Though I personally associate Leonard Nimoy with Sentinel before Galvatron, both because Bay's movies are how I got into the franchise and because "my" Galvatron is a psychotic madman, and Nimoy is just too... Nimoy for that.

A solid list but I would've put Robert Stack at 5 instead of the rock, cliffjumper was barely even in the show so we didnt really get to see if he had the voice acting chops to bring justice to the character. Stack on the other hand was the perfect magnus & he did an awesome job with the character.

Don't forget about Takei's earlier Transformers role as Yoketron in Animated. That I would say is his signature role in the franchise.

Also speaking of Animated, an honorable mention to Lance Henriksen as Lockdown. Doubt I could hear anyone else in the role if he ever gets featured in a series again.

I met Tony Todd once when I was a kid at the Calgary comic convention (Peter Cullen was at this years Calgary convention)

It was awesome I think it was in 2009 or 2010 so I got to hear his Fallen voice which was amazing.

I also met the guy who did the English dub Car Robots/RID Optimus Prime voice on the same day.

I do have pictures if I can find them I'll post them here.

No offense to Mr. Cullen, but saying he has more star power than Weird Al is crazy talk. Also, Cullen is a voice actor by profession, thus not a "celebrity voice actor".

I think of all of these lists, this is the list I've most agreed with, though I do think those asking for Scatman Cruthers or Robert Stack to have been on the list may have a point. I think maybe I'd take Orson Welles off for one of those two. His Unicron work is not his best, and pretty much anyone could have done it given the amount of manipulation done to the voice. It's no wonder there're so many rumors floating around that he died before recording most of the dialog and Nimoy did the rest, even if that's probably not the case.

Speaking of... Nimoy as first, that's 100% perfect. In a movie filled with celebrity voices, he stood head and toes above the rest, and turned in a stellar, iconic performance as Galvatron. And my opinion has nothing to do with him recently dying, thank you very much.

What has weird al really done over the years besides a bunch of silly parodies like "eat it" and "amish paradise" ? Is the guy still even relevant ? He is two steps away from being stan bush. Peter Cullen has made millions over the years and has played Prime in at least 3 different continuities. He is more of a bonofide celebrity any day of the week than weird al.

On Lenord Nimoys Galvatron voice being better, thats your opinion. Not taking anything away from Nimoy, but his voice just isnt very Galvatrony in my opinion. Maybe it would have worked for Megatron better. Megatron was more cold and calculating while Galvatron was an insidious madman. They might have been the eame guy but the two had completely different personalities worthy of completly different style voices. I kind of see Galvatron similar to cobra commander another leader that wasnt all there.

14 studio albums
12 million+ albums sold
4 Grammy awards
4 Gold Records
6 Platinum Records
1000+ live shows (with his international tour for later this year recently announced)

I don't disagree with Leonard Nimoy's spot on the list, but I completely disagree that Galvatron was more ruthless or psychotic than Megatron as Leonard Nimoy portrayed him in the Movie.

Galvatron straight up murders Brawn, Prowl, and Ironhide in the glorious first 15 minutes, and you can assume the Battle of Autobot City saw several more casualties by his hand before Megatron took out Prime. Galvatron is ruthless, sure, but you can't say he's any more so than Megatron.

Plus, Galvatron didn't adopt his psychotic persona until after the Decepticon remnants rescued him in the events following the Movie.

Well I guess that explains why you didnt know about butchers harem. Youre too busy being a weird al mega-fan. Once again regional/cultural differences build a wall between us. I dont know how big weird al is out there or in other countries, but where I live he has always been considered a joke. Yes his videos are funny, but they pretty much cemented his legacy. Even the song he did for the 1986 G1 movie was a spoof of a serious song. And you have the nerve to say he has more "star power" then peter cullen? Cmon now....And peter cullen is the "star" of the bay series which is already 4 films strong. When you work with bay, you make millions. If peter cullen says he wants 2 million for part 5, do you think bay will say no ? He will pay the man. Transformers will not let him walk away. He will be the voice of every prime until the day he croaks...

Dare to be Stupid is an original song. It's a 'style parody' of Devo (which is a question in itself - how on this earth do you consider Devo serious in any way, shape, or form???), but not a spoof of an actual song.

Dude, I literally just said it. Dare to be Stupid is the original song. There is no other.

You sure have strong opinions about things you have no knowledge of.

Currently, I have friends over (nerdy friends in fact) and did a survey: 4/6 don't know who Peter Cullen is, including myself. But everyone knows who Weird Al is.

More importantly, do they know who Devo is?

Had to look up Tony Todd because I didn't know who he was. Looking him up on IMDB shows a lot of low budget and B movies, work as an extra on TV shows, and a ton of voice credits. Not sure I would have even considered him as an honorable mention, let alone give him the number 2 spot. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, I've honestly only heard his voice and he's good, but doesn't really seem to fit in with a group of household names. Good voice actor? Sure. Celebrity voice actor? Not so much.

I'd place him in the same ranks as Scatman Crothers and Casey Kasem, people who are famous in their own right, but got their roles because they were already fulltime voice actors, not because of their celebrity status. The other guys on the list, they aren't voice actors by trade; Crothers, Kasem, and Todd were. I doubt anyone called these guys and said "we need your name attached to this role, it'll really boost viewership!" These guys auditioned just like everyone else.

Peter Cullen got his celebrity status from the movies, not before them. A celebrity voice actor would be one that got their role because of their star status, he got his star status because of his role, it's not the same thing. He only got play Optimus Prime in the movies because of the fans, it took some convincing to get Bay on board with it.

Just because you recognize someone's name doesn't necessarily make them a celebrity voice actor.

Peter Cullen net worth: 6 M$

Weird Al net worth: 16 M$

>:oP

And guys, good call on Lance Henricksen!

And as for tony todd, you could have saved a lot of time and just gone to his wiki page to read the first lines:

Anthony Tiran "Tony" Todd (born December 4, 1954) is an American actor and film producer, known for portraying Ben in both the 1990 and 2014 remakes of Night of the Living Dead, Candyman in the horror movie franchise of the same name and William Bludworth in Final Destination.

That is no doubt a celebrity voice actor.

But Todd got his roles because he is a star.

He is a Celebrity just because you never heard of them doesn't mean their not a Celebrity

And your using IMBD as a source?

Even Wikipedia is better.

Candyman, Final Destination and Night of the living Dead are not low budget B movies their above that.

Frankly I'm insulted but that's just bias on my part for having had met him as a kid and pretty much idolizing him for a long time.

Tony Todd was hired as a voice actor after he became a celebrity fyi.

Lets not be too harsh on the poor guy, he simply didnt know who Tony Todd was. What matters most is that you know him and thus can see where I am coming from with this list. If it wasn't for Nimoy's stellar performance I would have put Todd first simply because the voice was so perfect for the character while it also being instantly recognisable to me.

And Emerge, IMDB shows you the most recent stuff first, so its easy to lose track of why someone you don't know is famous, wiki gives a more broad sense. What you did is like going to IMDB to look for Robert DeNiro and then saying that the actor is not that important since all he does is dumb comedies, spoofs and b movies (Little Fockers, Last Vegas, The Big Wedding, The Bag Man, Machete...).

And hey, now Emerge knows one of Horror's finest leading men. Check out Candyman (which I refer to in the list) when you have a chance!

Once again your ignorance shows. I clearly provided you a link to where I got the information from. That doesn't make me a "mega-fan". Yeah, I am a fan of Weird Al, but I can also do a Google search. Something you have clearly demonstrated to have difficulty with.

Once again regional/cultural differences build a wall between us. I dont know how big weird al is out there or in other countries, but where I live he has always been considered a joke.

Once again, ignorance. Just because something isn't "popular" in your area, it therefore can't be popular elsewhere.

And you have the nerve to say he has more "star power" then peter cullen?

Funny how I never said that. But now that you bring it up. Yes, I would say he has more "star power" than Peter Cullen. Go up to someone not associated with the Transformers fandom and ask them who they've heard more of out of Cullen or Yankovic. You'll find more people will be answering Yankovic.

He's a voice actor. Clearly you're a "mega-fan" of his so of course you think he's the bees knees. I think you'll find most of the on-screen actors were paid more.

Feel free though to prove me wrong with actual facts and not just fanboy babblings.

btw, bit of advice, Google is your friend. You should try to learn how to use it. It will save you a whole lot of embarrassment in the future. Image

And a lot of that $6M will have come from his voice acting work over the years that wasn't just Transformers.

Like I said I idolize Tony Todd he's an inspiration I've met him a couple times.

Like I said I'm bias and I have major anger issues so usually when I see something that I know is not true I have a habit of arguing and try to prove my point.

I'd be curious if anyone had a source to Cullen's compensation from the 4 live action TF movies. If I were a betting man, I would probably say at least half his net worth comes from there.

For that matter, I'd also be curious to hear how much of his net worth came from TF:Prime, and whether the income from 65 episodes + Rise of the Predacons stacks up to even just 1 of the Bay movies. :-?

Where's Jon3.0 when you need him? :P

Damn Im shocked by the amount of love weird al gets from the TF fandom. Its like marky mark all over again. I stand by what I said earlier. I never met a person who knew who weird al was and didnt think he was a joke. Whatever. Its time for the fight of our generation. Ill check back in later. Go Pacquiao !!!
