Coinciding with the release of Transformers: Lost Age in Japan this week, the Japan Times has posted a fairly lengthy article with interviews with the main cast and crew. Featuring comments by director Michael Bay, leading cast members Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, and Nicola Peltz, the article, posted here, looks at various aspects of the movie, its production and different people's take on it - check out some sections below!

His latest, “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” promises more of the action and explosions Bay is known for, but the director reportedly almost didn’t take the job this time around. He’s not saying why, but he admits he was “prevailed upon. Expertly.” Coming back on board for a fourth time, he decided to make a few changes to the franchise. In particular, he didn’t want the robots to look too much like toys.

“I understand the need to draw an audience of kids and the global considerations, but I wanted to be involved with something that had a longer-lasting, even cerebral appeal. And I don’t want to be tied — artistically or in people’s minds — to ‘Transformers’ after ‘Transformers,’ ” he says, perhaps alluding to the series’ planned fifth installment.

While the Japanese roots of “Transformers” may be apparent in the design of the robotic heroes and villains of the film, the “global considerations” Bay refers to come mainly from the newly important Chinese market.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” was partly financed by Chinese backers, has Chinese product placement and co-stars Li Bingbing as the owner of a factory manufacturing Transformers for a U.S. outfit named KSI. Bay says that cooperation between China and the United States for future filmmaking ventures will be important. The tendency of Hollywood to cast the citizens of foreign nations in villainous roles might be coming to an end if that’s the case, I suggest, to which Bay replies, “I don’t think the Chinese see themselves as villains. They do want to be admired.”

Grammer, who played the titular role in the popular U.S. sitcom “Frasier” (1993-2004) takes on the role of Harold Attinger, the paranoid head of an elite CIA unit.

“His name’s Harold — isn’t that a perfect, anal-retentive, paranoiac name?” Grammer says with a grin. “Then you have Cade, pretty much an average Joe, and his daughter Tessa (Peltz) — these wonderful names! Stanley Tucci is this arrogant technocrat (head of KSI) who wants to make and control his own Transformers, and his name is Joshua Joyce. It’s a bit comic-bookey, but it really works on screen.”

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” has succeeded in drawing in a large audience despite replacing its cast, and Grammar believes this is because the film brings back the real draw — familiar robotic characters.

I thought Stinger was cool, but I felt no emphasis on the character throughout the movie. I felt he was a higher advanced drone. But the way he dies is pretty awesome. And I hope they have a deleted scene of the autobots going after stinger because They disappear through that whole scene

I bet that there is a whole bunch of deleted scenes in this movie. If you go to YouTube and watch a bunch of TF4 filming videos there is a whole bunch of things that weren't seen in the movie. Some examples, the large explosions at a Chinese pagoda in Detroit, Cade running towards the camera with his gun-blade in Hong Kong, Stinger tailing the Autobots in Hong Kong, the sports cars driving around in Hong Kong, the argument with an Asian guy and two cops, Shane almost hitting a couple of people in the Texas street chase, Shane's car being blocked by Attinger's men, the Autobots rolling in Hong Kong in an alley, and so much more.

I'm not really expecting any deleted scenes to make it to the DVD/Blu-Ray versions since, well, the last three films' DVDs/Blu-Rays were devoid of deleted scenes.

No, ROTF's IMAX version doesn't count since those were put into the feature presentation, just as they were when that film aired on IMAX. So those scenes weren't completely "deleted".

Thats an awesome sound effect. And i'm happy the dvd comes out in sptember. Captain america 2 is taking forever for a dvd release. Aoe is getting it done. And I think Lockdown is a transformer, but he never took sides he just accepts missions from other races.

It was kind of random of me to say that, but he seemed just different compared to the rest. For example, when Optimus is fighting Galvatron and Lockdown comes, when his gun fave transforms, small tentacles can be seen coming out of his face while transforming. I just was stating what I thought. Maybe I should say, not exactly the same as a Cybertronion.

One can be a Cybertronian and belong to neither faction.

And if one goes by the greater Movieverse continuity, he used to be a Decepticon when he appeared in the Cyber Missions cartoon, the Unite for the Universe manga, and the Nefarious comic series. Since some time would have past between those events and the AOE movie's events, it's entirely possible that he left the Cons and sided with the Creators during the intermediate time.

Lockdown may have never been in either faction. They weren't always at war,so he may have been a normal Cybertronian who left Cybertron and decided to be a Bounty Hunter.He could've been modified and upgraded at any point.He could be hated by both factions.
I follow only the films,not the comics as they constantly contradict, so I'm no authority. This is just how I picture him.

Virtually every post-movie comic has done something to fix some kind of continuity error created by each film that came before them.

Like, "The Reign of Starscream" fixed Brawl's calling himself "Devastator" from the first movie, and showed what happened to Barricade when he just vanished in the first movie.

"Sector 7" and "Foundation" patched up a whole network of continuity errors created by ROTF, while also prepping us for DOTM.

And "Convergence" fixed just about every remaining inconsistency and oddity across all three films and all IDW movieverse comics, such as finally explaining how The Fallen got out of his sarcophagus prior to ROTF when he was still trapped within it after the Nemesis it was aboard left Cybertron.

Don't get me wrong; I'm okay with (read: gotten used to) the actual movieverse Bee's face, but if given a choice, I prefer this one.

The thing about the bayformers that I never liked was the misunderstanding of good design. First of all you need to make a simple and distinct silhouette, then some larger forms with clear purpose and then smaller features to add detail where necessary. The Bayformers are ALL detail in a confusing mess with no clear purpose. Sometimes it's hard to tell if something is even an arm. While these are talented and well executed images, they aren't very well designed.

For an example of good design and what i really wish the movie transformers looked like, have a look at the design on Toyworld's TW02b Black Orion figure

You've got the clear silhouette, the larger forms and the intricate detail. I'd say this figure is detailed enough that it would negate Mr Bay's problem with G1-esque designs. That they would look too simple and boring onscreen. Oh for what might have been.

So has the release date of the other editions changed or is it just these that are coming out in December.

Also to the person who mentioned toyworlds Orion, in my opinion I don't consider it good design, it barely looks like the character it's supposed to be.

december 31st is a wednesday so i'm sure this is just a temp date. it shows the same date for the steelbook version on Futureshop but i've pre-ordered from them a lot and there's often a temp date used (usually the last day of the year) until its updated.

EDIT: i checked and even the regular blu-ray and the dvd shows the december 31st date. since we already know this comes at the end of september, then its definitely temp dates.

I'm of the same opinion, to a degree.

The whole thing with the super-complex designs started with Bay wanting to evoke the feel of "mechanical muscles" on the TF's, so they won't look so "man made". Hence, the exposed pistons and gears. I personally think it was a good idea, and it does bridge that gap between being robots, but alien ones that look like they evolved on their own. The thing is, Bay's not one for subtlety or over-thinking a concept, so don't expect him to worry about purpose or practicality.

Personally, I think the original 2007 movie and ROTF designs are fine, in that they are still quite recognizable in shape and silhouette despite the numerous details. It was in DOTM where they started getting lazy, and began hiding car parts using even more "smoke and mirrors" visual trickery. You can clearly see DOTM Megatron's truck parts folding into him and disappearing. The Dreads cheated just as much.

I thought Bay and his team did great with the design work.Especially the Decepticons.They looked like monsters. In AOE,however,the humanoid faces on "Newest" Autobots were welcome as well,giving them a by far friendlier look. They also reminded me of the G1 faces.

I thought that the most fluent designs were in 2007. AoE did a great job pulling in all aspects for character and physical design. ROTF and DOTM got pretty complicated overall.

Remember back in 2010 when Takara tried to make Animated into a prequel series for the movies? Well after seeing AOE it does in a funny way connect with Animated if it were a part of the Movie universe.

I mean if you're going by the Japanese continuity of both the show and movies it could happen like this of how I think it could occur. After the events of season 3 of TFA, space bridges are now made to the point of going into different directions. Sentinel finally had enough of how Optimus and the Autobots do things and decided to break Megatron out and made a deal with him secretly to make sure they both get what they wanted. Afterwards Megatron and his Decepticons trash Cybertron apart then the Allspark was flung into space with Megatron going after it into an alternate demension which does lead into the events of movie 1 of him being trapped in ice. Then the main Autobot cast gets upgraded into the movie forms and follow after with the Decepticons in trail with one of Starscream's clones being Movie Starscream and Soundwave being a part of the group. Hound could be like Ironhide/Bulkhead's twin brother and Drift being one of Yoketron's student and honoring Prolw by looking like him in a sense.

Sari herself could be of the same type of TFs Alice was in ROTF and for the Dinobots it can be argued that in AOE they're the same ones from TFA with Scorn being a new member. Also small things like Ratchet in AOE knowing Lockdown and Optimus's comment of Bee being difficult to handle in the same movie do bring in mind Animated.

It could be me just ovethinking this or having too much time on my hands but still even if the idea of Animated being a prequel to the movies is silly due to Takara's odd reason to mesh some shows together even if they don't make sense why it's still a funny idea and seeing as how AOE is strongly influenced by animated helps this even more. lol

Though it was the initial plan for the series's Japanese dub, the Japanese ended up dubbing it faithfully to the English version, albeit with some edits made to it for specific reasons, but ones that differ from the aborted "movie prequel" plan.

The Stunticons never did it for me.My favorite Combiners were the Combaticons and Bruticus
