The latest wave of Studio Series deluxes is slowly appearing in the US. While a few have said to have seen them, Cprime18 is the first to contact us with photographic evidence. These two were found at a Target in San Antonio Texas. This wave is particularly infamous for the size discrepency between the two toys with Lockdown being the same height as a Generations deluxe and Jazz being far smaller than that. For more size comparisons, feel free to check out our pictorial review of Jazz to see if this is a toy you find worth the money.

If you already have these toys, please let us know your thoughts on them and if you find them, be sure to let the community know through your local sightings threads or the sightings section.

Jazz is ridiculously small, but he does look good. The paint is especially nice.

Lockdown looks great but I just can't get behind a Lockdown figure that isn't absurdly tall in robot mode. Good looking figure though, not gonna deny.

Via regular source of news Loopaza Megastore on Facebook, we have some new listings for Takara Tomy Transformers figures due out in September to December, including the Studio Series line, the Movie Masterpiece one and some Bumblebee Movie figures thrown into the mix, as we knew already from previous news coverage. Some of the names and numbers showing up below are recognisable, but the rest are very much up to speculation and rumour-mongering. So join the discussion and let us know what you think!

Takaratomy Transformers

We've received new details of the coming up Takaratomy Transformers line-up. The most interesting is the coming of MPM-6 & MPM-7, both still named "unknown character" on the listing but fans should noticed that MPM-6 is Ironhide. So what is actually MPM-7? Rumor from the US that will possible be Jazz but Nothing in this point just yet.

There are also new code MV6 on the list will two characters, one is Optimus Prime and one is Bumblebee. looks like they will be the toys figures from the New Bumblebee Movie! and both will scheduled to release in October is Japanese side.

There are also some others Transformers characters in number 13 - 18, they should be the Studio Series, 13 & 17 are unknown characters, 14 is Ratchet ( DOTM ver.?), 15 is Ironhide, 16 is Bumblebee (2007 ver.?), 18 is Starscream (ROTF ver. ?)

Yay, lots of new Studio figures look forward to even if we are getting more into repaint territory. :)

We always knew repaints were coming sooner or later. Still hopefully they'll be coming with new backdrops as well

I expect RotF Starscream to come with the same backdrop pic as Megatron and Prime have done already but that kinda makes sense since they were all involved in that forest battle and I'm still gonna buy that Screamer anyways cos I love the mold and want that toy with the tattoos I like a lot too and the buzzsaw. :)

That's an awful lot of stuff coming out all at once in October for Japanese fans. Glad Hasbro spreads things out a little more.

A really quick note about the numbering in the listing: they may use the TakaraTomy numbering and not the Hasbro one. TakaraTomy's is offset by 1 starting with 09 (Thundercracker), and by 2 starting with 19 (Bumblebee + Dino Cassettes) pending other exclusives.

No doubt its Takara's numbering, since Hasbro's 13 is Megatron, and Takara has already released him as 11.

So that mystery 13 is something else.

And seeing 14 as another Ratchet, and 18 another starscream, it seems Takara is doing its own thing now which we may not get in Hasbro's line at all or if we do it will have a very different number.

Greetings All,

While I am not collecting these toys, I am quite fascinated by the numbering system. I was just wondering however...

On unicron.com, there is currently an entry for a "Revenge of the Fallen" deco of Starscream, however its not numbered, and only shows the same picture as #6 (Movie 1 Voyager Starscream). Has there been any confirmation, or rumor that there will be a RotF Deco Starscream? (which I imagine would get its own number, even if it is a straight up repaint) or is this just an error on unicron.com ?

^Awesome, Thank you. I guess nothing on the :HASBRO: side has been confirmed yet, as far as numbers being assigned (other than #19 as an exclusive for the BB Movie)

As for :TAKARATOMY:

their number system and price points on that above print out don't seem to make sense with what's been released up to this point.

Hasbro and Takara Tomy are releasing the same exact figures now. We have heard no news on the contrary since the unification!

That makes... no sense. OK, just we're all on the same page, here's the list compiled by yours truly, with some educated guesses here and there:

1 / SS-01 Bumblebee (TF 2007)
2 / SS-02 Decepticon Stinger
3 / SS-03 Crowbar
4 / SS-04 Autobot Ratchet (TF 2007)
5 / SS-05 Optimus Prime (RotF)
6 / SS-06 Starscream (TF 2007)
7 / SS-07 Grimlock
8 / SS-08 Blackout

9 / (N/A) Thundercracker (TRU Exclusive)

10 / SS-09 Autobot Jazz
11 / SS-10 Lockdown
12 / SS-11 Decepticon Brawl
13 / SS-12 Megatron (RotF)

14 / SS-13 "Character A"
15 / SS-14 Ratchet (DotM?)
16 / SS-15 Ironhide
17 / SS-16 Bumblebee (Bumblebee movie?)
18 / SS-17 "Character B"

19 / (N/A) Bumblebee Vol. 1 with Diaru and Uruaz (SDCC 2018)
20 / (N/A) ???

21 / SS-18 Starscream (RotF, as leaked)

Standalone number is Hasbro's, the SS one is TakaraTomy. No number (N/A) means no release yet.

Not saying Thundercracker could never see release in Japan, it's just we haven't heard anything about that. TakaraTomy still does its own thing with the toys, it's just that there are no appreciable differences anymore.

Store exclusives are fair game like all regular retail items, but releasing them and how is still up to TakaraTomy's discretion and how they can find proper venues.

Main point remains the toys themselves have no differences between the two companies, that's the only thing the whole streamlining has done. The lines are not treated the same, to take PotP again as an example, the toys were released out of order, with the complete combiner teams released in single waves and the retools at the very end of the line.

As with Brawl, Megatron and Jazz, while Studio Series wave 2 has hit a few retailers, there is little talk about them. They have yet to reach saturation and their higher prices at several retailers might make them less obvious to own. I have a pictorial review for every toy of Wave 2 so far so I thought I would complete that with Lockdown. As with every other toy in this wave (and line), there is a lot to like but it is also far from perfect.

The first thing I would like to get out of the way is that unlike what it seemed at first, this is not a tall deluxe. For the life of me I could not find his previous deluxe in my collection bins, so I have a comparison to a bunch of other toys instead to show you what I mean.

People had wondered if this was a retool of Cogman but it isn't. It is as similar to Cogman as it is to TLK Barricade, which are all shellformers with the feet in the back and the torso at the front. That is basically where the similarities end. Unlike Cogman, I found Lockdown to have an uninventive transformation for a shellformer.

Image

Image

Image

While the backpack does fold into itself, it is still pretty big and definitely takes away from the silhouette the robot mode sculpting promises. It doesn't help him feel more boxy and wide than he should be, which is already conveyed with his truncated neck and wide arms. About the arms, I do not know why they chose to have the upper arm be actual car mode detail rather than sculpting some robot mode detail under that piece and making it face that way. it just looks off. Yes, they do add these flip out robot mode detail launchers and while it is a good idea, it is not done well. They have a very flimsy connection and can easily pop off.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The weapons are fine. No gun face, but we do get the hook. We also get a Sword/Blaster (something very common in Age of Extinction) but he cant hold it as a blaster. Both weapons can be hooked onto the outside of the forearms, which is also where they can be hooked on in vehicle mode.

Image

Image

Image

Image

The sculpting is clearly the best part though. Too bad the deco doesn't highlight as much as I would like, they don't even paint the Lamborghini symbol split across his chest.

Image

Image

Image

While the face sculpt is nice, the expression they gave him is that of massive boredom. To the point that it can really get in the way of a cool scene.

Image

I don't have any issue with the car mode. I like that they painted the tail lights but I would have really liked that they gave some detail to the Lamborghini symbol in the front, like they had done with last year's Hot Rod.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So in the end it's a great sculpt and cool car mode, definitely better than the previous attempt. However this is still a very typical shellformer at a scale that doesn't really help me. The nice sculpting hides away the fact that this toy doesn't accomplish much aside from looking good in a few areas, making it feel more like a mild improvement over the definite version of a character. Add that to a the lackluster deco and this is another example of a movie toy in the Studio Series line that doesn't feel more "premium" than any other movie toy from previous lines. He is fine but it's not a toy I think I will go back to often (until I have an accompanying Optimus).

Yeah again I like your photos but I just don't agree with your reviews. I think this Lockdown is a superb figure and a massive improvement over the previous attempt in size, sculpt and proportions and is in my opinion one of the coolest looking bad guy (avoided saying Decepticon cos he's technically not one) Transformers figures ever.

flip out robot mode detail launchers and while it is a good idea, it is not done well. They have a very flimsy connection and can easily pop off.

How? Mine don't even come off if I try pulling at them or lifting up the whole figure by either one of them.

Size difference between old deluxe and studio deluxe and Peru Kill.

(image from this thread on TFW2005 http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/t ... 903/page-3 )

I actually like the Studio figure more than Peru Kill. While PK does a better job folding away all the car parts, I prefer the look of the Studio figure much more. The old Deluxe just looks like a dork with those bad proportions it has. Like Jazz, Lockdown was another figure I paid £7 over the RRP for just to get it a bit earlier and I have no regrets. Love the sculpt and he looks great displayed on my shelf (with his unique backdrop art) or on my desk when he's my deskbot of the week or so. :P

My Lockdown (and Jazz and Prime)
DSC_0612.jpg

My photography is crap but I kinda like how one of Jazz's headlights on his shoulder has turned orange from the light shining through Prime's sword. That's neat. Again Jazz posing just fine even without needing the black stabiliser parts folded out.

The Transformers Studio Series line, featuring 'definitive' toy versions of the live action movieverse characters, has already had its Voyager class Starscream appearance (as you can see in our ranking here) - but as hinted at by the Takara Tomy listings found the other day, we may indeed have a second version of the same mold in the line, sporting the tattoo pattern as the previous Leader class figure had for Revenge of the Fallen.

Check out the image below, posted today by the Hasbro Pulse Instagram account, and brought to our attention by fellow Seibetronian Deadput - will you be double dipping, or do you have no interest in this redeco of the Decepticon second in command? Let us know in the Energon Pub!

That one was the obvious repaint. However, having the original SS Screamers plus the DOTM deluxe and HFTD leader, this one is unnecessary for me.
(Then I'll see it on clearance and I'll buy it anyway)

Looks cool! Between the first SS and HFTD Starscreams though I don’t think I need this one. Also, on kind of a cool note, this Starscream has a little Decepticon logo on it in the same spot as the electronics button on HFTD Starscream. It doesn’t look like this :CON: is a part of the on-screen tattoos, so it may be a cool reference to the past figure.

I don’t have a huge sample size of either line, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. I mean, compare SS Starscream to POTP Starscream. That being said though, $30 is a little high for a voyager class figure.

Considering the deluxes were around 20, which was already too much in my opinion I would assume the voyagers will be more. I honestly think 20 to 25 dollars is a good price for a voyager and certainly not a deluxe.

I can justify a deluxe costing about 12 to 15 or so. Even 15 feels a bit much but considering that the Prime Wars Trilogy has such good figures I don't mind paying more because it feels worth it. But yeah, 30 bucks for a voyager? Get outta here. I can see Brawl on Amazon for 29.99. No. Just no.

If they want us to pay more for something they need to give us bang for our buck. Yeah I'll admit I bought the Studio Series Ratchet on impulse. I regret paying 20 bucks for him, but I do like the figure. I wanted a movie Ratchet for my collection since I didn't have one. I found this figure to have loose parts and a lack of painted details. Granted I can fix the figure up (when I am less lazy) but I won't be buying any of these toys for full price at the store anymore.

If the figure can only come with ONE weapon, this make sense. It's also making the repaint more worth getting.

They won't give you more bang for the buck though as they need to maintain profit margins against rising production costs. This is capitalism and it sucks.

Exactly. It's either the prices rise, or the toys get "trimmed down". No one want THAT to happen to whole lines, right?

FOC Jazz:

--Packaging proudly say "COME WITH A GUN!" Gun is a dinky little thing.
--Hollow parts everywhere
--Very thin semi-soft plastics, almost clear
--Size dramatically reduced
--Barely any paint

But eh, it the same price at the RTS Jazz that came out some years ago. So it's all right!

Depends what you like I guess. I didn't find any of the Power of the Primes figures even worth buying. None appealed to me at their prices at all. There are a couple I may consider if I find them on heavy clearance but nothing more (and many I still wouldn't... PotP Jazz was reduced to £10 and I still couldn't muster up any enthusiasm to purchase it as to me it looks like junk especially since I used to own his far superior Takara repaint of the Reveal the Shield figure which I just noticed a pic of above). I've happily paid £23 each for a couple of my Studio Deluxes and even £30 each for Jazz and Lockdown and loved them both too. My Voyagers were various prices (Starscream was £33, Megatron was £30 and Prime was £27) and been very happy with those. Grimlock ehhh. I wish that one had been cheaper. I paid £53 and I was quite disappointed with the dino mode overall (and will likely pay the extra for the DNA Design upgrade kit). I don't really find many Transformers figures worth paying more than £50 for and certainly none of the Prime Wars stuff had me wanting to spend anywhere near that much (£50-£55 for blocky stuff like Leader class Blaster, a bunch of bricks that turns into a brick that contains little bricks? No thanks). Weird thing is a certain shop here in the UK (The Entertainer) charges the same price for Titans Deluxes as it did for TLK and now Studio deluxes. I think they corrected that with Power of the Primes deluxes but i cant remember but still I just find Studio's toys just better value for me personally because I get greater value out of the more complex and detailed movie designs than I ever do with the much more simplistic and blocky G1-esque types. So yeah it's down to personal taste and preference as to what you consider is worth your own money. :) I got £66 saved up for Ironhide and RotF Starscream here, and yeah i know it's a fair bit of cash but I genuinely love this line and it's figures more than any other toyline in a very long time and I'm sure they'll please me like the ones I have already bought have. :)

You'll have to post more pics when you get then carni :-)

@kanra precisely, we can demand a better deal for ourselves but we also have to be realistic and look at all angles.

That is honestly one thing I never understood. I guess the majority of people are either fooled into buying things (again I readily admit that I have made some purchases like that and its bummer when it happens) or B just accept something sub par when they know they should be getting something better.

Guess I gotta watch more reviews and pay better attention.

I almost want him for the buzzsaw...

...almost.

I already have the first movie version and I like him without the tattoos, but this one is very tempting. If I see it in stores at a slight discount, sure.

I have the movie 1 toy, and I like him enough to not buy the original Quad-S to replace him.

But waiting for the tattooed look for Quad-S? with the saw? That is what I wanted. Perfect.

Now to eventually find wave 2 (I want all 4) and then get Screamer after
