Seibertron's very own Japan corespondent, Matt, has sent us the very first video review of Takara Transformers Legends LG-55 Slugslinger. He does a great job at comparing it to the original toy and showing where some deco choices come from. It is interesting to note that while the Hasbro version (which we also included a review of or those interested in comparing) is usually meant to be more toy accurate, this Takara version does have very important features that the G1 toy had which the Hasbro version does not include such as the silver paint on the chest and the inclusion of a Target Master.
This review covers everything regarding this toy like the comic and the box, which states that the toy is for and audience of 15 and over (something your fellow news editor had not realized until now).

Enjoy!

And here is a comparison with the Hasbro version.

To be a little fair, the Japanese cartoon deco of Slugslinger from The Headmaster did feature more toy-accurate details than Slugslinger's American cartoon model from The Rebirth had, so Takara's going by Headmasters cartoon-accuracy in turn resulted in some toy-accuracy at the same time, which was also the case for a lot of these Headmaster-accurate Legends figures since the Japanese cartoon models in general were largely more toy-accurate than the Rebirth models were. ;)^

Also from fellow Seibertronian Cyberpath, and directly sourced from the Takara Tomy Transformers official Twitter account, we have in-hand promotional images of the upcoming Legends LG63 G2 Megatron release - using the Titans Return triple-changing Megatron figure, with a new 90s neon deco - due in February.

As the account explains, the G2 factor can be enhanced with the special sticker sheet included with the figure sporting a Megatron Rules, G2 Decepticon and Predacon symbols, and also features a tiny Noble / Savage homage from the Beast Machines animated series, redecoed from the Fangry Titan Master drone. Check out the images below!

In my opinion that mold works better for g2 Megatron, than g1 Megatron.

Ill stick with the G2 logo. That Megatron Rules looks dumb. I like to think that G2 was a real continiity with some kind of meaning (whatever it was) rather than as a nerf style corporate concoction to attract little kids.

Not purple enough for my liking (and never did care for that Megatron Rules sticker but hey it's there for those who did) but then I prefer this mold as G1 Megatron and I like it a lot for being a tank AND voyager sized (the jet mode is just a bonus I barely use but it's still a good one)
Image
(yeah i modified my figure a bit... yeah i suck but i like the new head much more)

Not sure how the cannon is attaching to the shoulder though. Tried to do that with mine and I couldn't find a place where it would stay on. Not a big deal. Was just curious.

There should be two 5mm holes on either side of Megatron's head for the cannon

Ah never mind. I misunderstood the perspective. It's the 5mm post of the extra bit of the cannon (that is grey on the G1 Megs figure though I painted mine black) that's insrted into the hole by his head. I was too focused on the center of the cannon thinking it was attached to his shoulder. Thanks. :P

The Headmaster is decoed like BW Megatron, that's why. The T-Rex and gator forms (especially the purple one) double as G1 Megatron ;)

Probably not since that version never saw release in Japan as Megatron. Only as Megastorm.

I'm thinking I'll be using the Predacon stickers and use this as a new Beast Megatron since it doesn't quite work for me as G2 purple Megs and it is his Transtector after all. Just too bad he already has a big Decepticon logo on his chest by default.

Just got the last batch of Legends figures from 2017. Perceptor has a weird Headmaster port, I'm trying to connect Brainstrom's head (it's a main reason why I bought Perceptor) but it's not going in. Why did they suddenly change the mechanism? Help?

Try turning the Headmaster's little head backwards, sideways, or at an angle and see if that helps.

Thanks, I tried every orientation, nothing works. Disappointing.. Anyone else have this issue?

Edit: solved with a utility knife in ten seconds. Removed the bits that got in the way.

As a "universal emulator" you'd think that Perceptor would have had the most accommodating Headmaster port of them all.

First from my latest Legends batch is LG55 Slugslinger.

Image

After Triggerhappy and Misfire there are no surprises here. But HasTak made each figure look different enough. The colour-scheme and paint look great, love the face-sculpt especially the eyes. Though there's a strange rectangle around his mouth that I can't explain.

Image

The jet-mode is also different enough from the other two. I really like the twin nosecone gimmick, even if neither can actually accommodate a pilot.

Image

Once again, no landing gear, it seems to be sculpted into the hinge.

Image

The pilot compartment isn't as swanky as Misfire's.

Image

The Decepticon Targetmaster jets seem to lost transformation steps with each new release. Not a critique, just an observation.

Image

Caliburst is also pretty much the same toy as the last two Targetmaster guns, but again, look different enough.

Image

Kind of weird that Takara didn't design the guns in such a way where they could also connect to the Decepticon's arm like in the Japanese cartoon. It seems like an easy task for them.

Image

I like Slugslinger and happy to have all three jets, even if they are stuck with the Headmaster gimmick.

You know, these Headmaster Targetmasters got me thinking about something.

The Legends manga made Super Ginrai into a new kind of "-master" called a Triplemaster, in which he utilizes the powers of a Headmaster (his own head), a Godmaster (the "Iacon" engine sculpted onto his torso), and a Getmaster (any other little guy who can be placed inside his chest's cockpit compartment) all at once.

If Super Ginrai can be considered a "Triplemaster" by having all three of those other "-master" abilities at once, I wonder if all of these Headmaster Targetmasters would, by the same token, be considered something like "Doublemasters". ;)

Next is LG54 Bumblebee. I still love the fact that these tiny "Legends" class figures have room for a driver. Also, Takara upgraded the car-mode from the Hasbro edition -- clear windshields so you can actually see the driver and silver rims. (But don't get used to it.)

Image

It can even accommodate MP-10 Spike.

Image

The transformations in this line continue to impress me, this one folds like an origami. Articulation is what you'd expect from this size class.

Image

Image

And I like that they've included Spike/Cerebros. (A body/transtector would be nice. The head goes pretty well with Doublecross though.)

Interestingly enough, not only is the Headmaster body for Spike's Exosuit an all new mold, but his Cerebros face is likewise a fully new mold that's completely different from the Cerebros face of Hasbro's Emissary Titan Master.

I wonder what bugged them about the original sculpt. Pity Perceptor didn't get the same treatment. His face looks off model compared to how accurate the other ones are. Even the pack-in manga used the cartoon face. (The box was strangely big btw!)

Izzat the Guido style in AHM? Perceptor I mean. As for the transtector, don't you have a Takara Fortmax? Fortress can share the transtector with "Spike".

Also, all these #3 Destron targetmaster jets(already completed mine) are simply awesome! The redecos of the HMs are outrageously delish! :x

Probably nothing, but separating a Titan Master from a toy that large (ergo with a *lot* of gang-molded parts) would have been too wasteful to consider. Besides, it builds upon The Rebirth with the tech used by Daniel's exo-suit.

I admit some ignorance on the process but wouldn't they be making 3D printed molds directly from 3D files now?

I know Hasbro uses 3D printed extensively internally now. And I assumed that's how the retools and shared engineering since CW worked.

It's all just 3D objects in files where gang molding is concerned. And I suspect reissues are being built from 3D scans rather than original molds, which is how figures with "lost" molds have been reissued. (It would also account for why KO quality is so sharp now and how KO companies actually have resources to subtly fix or improve figures. And also why proportions are sometimes distorted in ways that a cast probably wouldn't generate like KO Masterpiece Sideswipe's head.)

My best guess would be that Takara didn't think Cerebros was toon accurate enough and happened to have time in the schedule. And with Perceptor? They probably didn't have time in the schedule.

Only for testing purposes, really. 3D printing is nowhere near the quality of the traditional cast molds. Again, Emissary comes with a really big toy, and using only him would be a real waste with all the extra parts cast.

No, the 3D data isn't used for printing figures, but it is used for tooling out metal molds. Thing is when you're already going to the trouble of making a new body mode for the Headmaster then it really makes no difference whether the face is new or old.

The last of the batch, LG56 Perceptor. Some random thoughts: Great microscope mode! Really invokes the original. Great colours, too. Love the transformation. The body also looks good. But the head & face-sculpt... ugh. Why didn't Takara redo it? The shape of the eyes is wrong.. and the extreme cheek-bones and chin.. I wonder if it's the same guy who sculpted the faces of MP Starscream & Sideswipe and UW4 Hook. Even the manga artist was like "eh, forget this."

Image

Image

Image

Articulation's good. Balance is a little off when standing straight, good thing that he has those tank-mode heels.

Image

Gotta say that Ramhorn is impressive for its size. Lots of moving parts, and the paint is fantastic!

Image

They both have a "tank" mode.

Image

And as I was shooting this stuff I realised that I now have the "Microbots" bots!

Image

Also, the microscope works pretty well with Masterpiece.

Image

Image Image

Perceptor has a different neck port than the other Headmasters, it didn't fit every head so I had to shave slightly to do this..

Image

"Four million years ago, a group of small Autobots left Cybertron in search of a new home. They crashed landed on the planet "Master." One among them was the brilliant bot known as Brainstorm."

Image

"To survive the planet's brutal environment, these Autobots developed the ability to transform into heads that inhabit bigger robotic bodies known as "Transtectors.""

Image

"Eventually these Autobots reunited with their kin on Cybertron."

Image

"One day, Brainstorm was plucked from his reality by a group of misplaced Transformers, each one from a different dimension. Their leader Jetfire (formerly known as Skyfire) invited Brainstorm to join them on their mission to fix destabilised worlds."

Image

"On one of the team's many missions Brainstorm's Transtector was destroyed, requiring him to use a special battle car in its place."

Image

"Another mission took them to a world where every Transformer was a Headmaster. Brainstorm quickly befriend the Autobot scientist, Perceptor."

Image

"Unfortunately, Perceptor was slain in battle against the Decepticons of that world."

Image

"Perceptor passed on his Transtector to Brainstorm in place of the one he had lost."

Image

"Brainstorm and his team continue to travel from dimension to dimension maintaining the integrity of the multiverse."

I like my figures to have a back-story.

Hopefully people don't mind a request... I'm trying to find pictures of something. I looked through a number of pages of this thread, and did a search of the forums in general, all to no avail.

Anyway, to cut to the point, would anyone have any images, hopefully against a neutral background, of Blurr with the Haywire that came with Doublecross? Preferably showing Blurr wielding him in both modes? (Assuming Haywire can attach to Blurr's vehicle mode. I seem to recall some speculations that clips Haywire had that none of the others have was to facilitate that interaction.)

Finally, if anyone does have such images available, would you mind if I used a few (one for each mode) on my website? (Properly credited, of course.)

I wonder if the Legends Blurr reissue/restock has been delayed because they are retooling it to accommodate the Haywire Targetmaster? Blurr, Scourge, and the others that were named and voted on for a reissue in the Legends line were supposed to come out at the end of December 2017. It's food for thought, at least.

Sorry to tell you but there was no way to attach Haywire to Blurr in vehicle mode

The Legends Blurr and Scourge reissues already came out last month, unchanged from their first release.

Yea, i figured theyd be unchanged. Still waiting for TFSource to get their shipment of LG Blurr in though, always seems its my shop of choice that gets it all last :(

Then what are the extra clips on Haywire that people were speculating about for?

Well,if no one else is forthcoming before your Doublecross arrives, I'll take it! And if chuckdawg1999 is indeed correct about there not being a proper way to attach it in vehicle mode, I'll be happy to accept your best efforts towards an aproximation, even if it is just propping open the cockpit a bit and balancing it on top, or awkwardly tabbing it into one of the peg holes on Blurr's side.

WTF, TFSource!? Every once in a while, they get something exceedingly late for apparently no good reason.

I'm working a couple options and seeing if I can setup a quick neutral background for you. There doesn't appear to be a good way to attach Haywire to Blurr. Certainly the clips molded in do not match anything I see. And I am actually having an issue getting the gun handle to fit into the side holes on Blurr. I'll try to get something to work, though...
