After the initial looks we got in the reviews for both Swoop and Slug from the new Transformers: Power of the Primes toyline, YouTube user Kevin Liu has finally uploaded a video review of the last of the currently available figures from the first wave - though the Leader class Optimus Prime was also reviews, here: Voyager class Grimlock!

The Dinobot leader is shown off in the embedded video below in both robot and dinosaur mode, including a lot of junk in the trunk department - or tail, if you will - and the new addition for the line in the torso mode for Dinobot combiner Volcanicus. Also shown are the the other dino-buddies, Slash included, the Prime Master armor and compatibility, and some size comparisons. Check it out!

:APPLAUSE: I'm still not sure that the lower waist is transformed correctly. There seem to be some pegs that are sticking up that look suspicious. I am a little bummed the shoulders are out as far as they are... wonder if there's a way to pinch them in closer. Also... why has nobody clipped the fists on to the side of the chest to help fill it out (like seen @ Hascon)?

They're shown sticking out like that on the gray model as well so that does seem to be the right way. The tabs are probably used in T-rex mode.

I'm guessing they aren't filling in the torso because they don't have the spare fists from the other two Dinobots. But then, they should just use Swoop and Slag's fists in the torso to demonstrate and borrow HFGs from somewhere else as hands.

Grimlock looks nice. Can't wait to compare it in hand to the MP. And I think Slag and Swoop are great. Can't wait for the others. But imo that combined mode doesn't look nice at all.

I see no reason why they couldn’t have given him bigger toe claws. It makes him look so derpy without them. Looks like a 3rd party company will have to fix this...

Somebody forgot to mention the video was in Chinese lol. But my favorite part was when he broke out the poor mans MP-10 and made fun of the scale with a cartoon clip. Volcanicus looks horrible. Why do his shoulders have to be sticking out so far to make his toeso look like an exaggerated animated superhero physique? Can they be put closer to his chest to get a chunkier torso? Since Fansproject has given us more properly scaled dinobots, I really need the combined mode to look right for any hope of a serious display piece. With slag and swoop and slash in hand, im happy but dammit the scale sucks lol...

It doesn't appear that the shoulders can be brought in, at least not without sacrificing stability, but the intent is that you fill out his sides using the spare hands from two of the limbs.

Bot mode and tree modes are good combined modes suck only transformer I know that long arms and short stumpy legs is optimal primal should have torso mode bigger for legs be longer in combined so it doesn’t look weird put it on all fours look like gorilla hands touch knees

I had to go back and look for images with the fists clipped on to the chest. I definitely prefer the extra fists on. I hadn’t noticed that, so thanks for sharing  I also have the FansProject versions (last one preordered), but will probably display both. I liked the smaller Planet X Swoop, too, so maybe these PoTP figures will become favs. I prefer my figures between scout/legends and Voyager scale, really don’t care for the Masterpiece scale, so we’ll see... but I do agree I would rather have the Dinobots larger than the Predacons. I will probably skip the oversized Predacons, having a third-party set I already like. I didn’t care for the giant Devastator from CW, due to both scale and poor detail on the figures.

Allright, after seeing how Volcanicus looks like without the hands to bulk it, I get the impression he may be the 'flimsy one' of the PotP Combiners, much like Menasor had the weakest torso mode of CW (despite this, it should be noted I still really dig the G2 Motormaster as a figure). I'll skip him and any potential retool, unless they are substantially improved or if that torso prove to be more durable and stable than it looks.

For now, back to the original plan: Abominus.

I have no problem with any of the PotP figures so far. For me Grimlock is the best of both worlds. Having a fairly faithful adaptation of the original, and working as a Combiner. A well planned combiner that doesn't rely on any previous fan concepts in its design. I'm really happy with this line thus far, filling in a lot of the gaps that CW couldn't get to. I just hope what was leaked (basically 3/4 of the 2018 schedule), isn't all, I hope there is more to come.

If I understood the leaks correctly, they gave us all of 2018, not just 3/4. Wave 4 PotP is going to be like wave 6 TR with 1 new deluxe and re-releases from the first 3 waves filling out the rest of the wave. This would also match up calendar-wise with the re-release wave being out in the run up to Christmas. Waves 5 and 6 would be in 2019 (with some possible early sightings ahead of Christmas like PotP wave 1 this year.

Well, I can accept that *IF* a proposed 5th/6th waves had mostly new content (we still haven't seen the last 4 of the Prime Masters in any form...) But if the line just abruptly stopped at the end of 2018, then I'd be disappointed with its lack of completeness.

I'm super excited about G1 dinobots! I have Slag and Swoop in hand and they are glorious. Swoop is damn near perfect to me. I'm usually not one to care too much about scale, but I do wish Slag was larger. Still a great figure nonetheless. Can't wait to get my hands on Grimlock and the others! Minus any potential QC issues, I'm sure I'll love the whole set, scale be damned. The combining aspect is an added bonus I'll likely never take advantage of.

The more I see of Grimlock and Starscream the more I like them. I just wish Starscream didn't have those crap stickers but I guess that's what reprolabels is for. Usually I'd wait to see what Takara does but I feel like if they do Starscream (which we have no reason to believe they won't) I have a feeling they'd go with a ghost version.

Grimlock looks really nice too but I just wish the combined modes shoulders stopped at Grimlock's shoulders. The extra bits that stick out just make it look off.

Surely they can at the very least work in a Monstructor in there, reusing a mix of Dinobots and Terrorcon molds. Especially since we've seen Cutthroat with an oddly Wildfly/Yokuryu head. He's one more combiner I expect but my hopes is that we could at least see Piranacon too. If not, oh well, I suppose it's not too bad since we could always see the Seacon later down the road in Generations since the combiner peg-and-port system for Deluxe+Voyager is a working model.

Meanwhile, Jazz remain a total anomaly to me. Why Jazz? Why the hell make a Deluxe Combiner Car that is a brand new mold and why make it Jazz? Why is it in there? Why not retool the CW Cars instead? Why bother with a new mold at all? And, again, why Jazz? Is there a plan to reuse this mold in later waves as a different character?

However: Could it be PotP suffered crippling budget cuts and that's why there are less new figures? Or are there just less Leader-class figures which is why Leader Evolution Optimus is getting a repack? Or alternatively, is there the expectations that it would be a figure high on demand, hence why it's showing up in two waves?

Jazz and Sideswipe are the only original Autobot Standard vehicles that didn't get a release in CW. I think some fans (at least myself) are hoping we will get a Sideswipe down the line, and perhaps 2 other Autobot cars from the 1985 line to complete the Autobot Combiner in which Inferno will be the torso. If Hasbro doesn't hopefully TT will.

I think they counted Sideswipe's involvement with his RiD self forming an arm of Ultra Bee. But of course it is not G1, something else entirely, but still a thought since they share the name, color, and mostly the look.

I wouldn't mind a Sideswipe though. I only have the MP, and I want a generations version.

Still gonna wait to see a Road Caesar down the line from someone soon hopefully

Finally found the deluxe's at a local Target. Picked up Dreadwind since I'm waiting on Takara for the rest of them. I really like him he's a solid figure, but to be fair he's coming from the already good Skydive mold. His prime card was Megatronus if anyone was wondering.

Well, to be fair, Sideswipe can just be a red Sunstreaker with a new head and added port for Prime Armor.

I thought the whole concept of Sideswipe and Sunstreaker were that they had the same alt mode but different looking robot modes since they end up with different car parts on their chests. If they end up with the same look then I dont think that works at all.

hasbro confirmed all 12 Prime Masters would be released so we have more waves to come that have yet to be leaked.

Because Hasbro is benevolent and knew that if they did, they would give me a heart attack.

The budget is the same. TR had 4 Leaders in he first 3 waves (Optimus, Blaster, Soundwave and Sixshot) and so does POTP (Rodimus, Optimus, Rodimus Unicronus and Optimus Primal). Plus 3 of the 4 in POTP are completely new molds while only 2 of the 4 in TR were new molds.
So budget wise, looking at the leaders, it looks like POTP has even more budget given on average per wave.

For a long while now, people have been thinking about what might happen to the Legends line from Takara Tomy Transformers, which has seen gathering together a fair few lines released as separate by their US counterpart company Hasbro. With Titans Return appearing in Legends, but Combiner Wars making up the Unite Warriors line, the latest line of Power of the Primes could have gone either way.

It appears we have an answer, courtesy of Planet Iacon over on Facebook, who bring us the full list of the first releases of Power of the Prime by Takara Tomy - though yet unnamed and lacking images - with the PP code for every figure (much like UW for Unite Warriors, or LG for Legends)! Currently scheduled for a May 2018 release, we're bound to hear more about this in the coming months, as only three Prime Masters, three Legend class, one Deluxe and two Leaders are currently shown off. Check it out below!

Takara Transformers Power of Prime Series:

PP-01 Micronus, 800 Yen
PP-02 Liege Maximo, 800 Yen
PP-03 Vector Prime, 800 Yen
PP-04 Dinobot Slash, 1500 Yen
PP-05 Wind Charger, 1500 Yen
PP-06 Beach comber, 1500 Yen
PP-07 Autobot Jazz, 2800 Yen
PP-08 Rodimus Prime, 7000 Yen
PP-09 Optimus Prime, 7000 Yen

All scheduled to be released on May 2018

I've had two Grimlocks -- the G1 original (who's dinohead is hanging by cracked plastic) and the recent Platinum Dinobots (Bayformer bodies + G1styled heads/colors + vacuum metalized).
IMG_8814.JPG
The original's alt mode T-Rex was perfect. But dem legs in bot mode? Maybe if he truly is part chicken.

My Platinum Grim looks interesting in alt mode, but his bot legs make Tall Man look short. If I wanted perfect, though, I'd save up for the MP. :BOT:

I'm curious how PotP Grimlock will look in-hand...but I don't love his T-Rex.

I'm a little surprised that they're doing the pretenders both separately and as the primes. Will be interesting to see how they change them, if they do at all.

Legends look like they're just back by themselves going off of the price, which is slightly disappointing but since they're doing the pretenders separately there's nothing to go with them.

The lack of the other deluxe's and both voyagers still kinda gives hope for the return of unite warriors. I think they're saving the teams for that and releasing everyone else under this new subline. That would put the final nail in the coffin for a full team for jazz though.

Yeah, Jazz being solo makes me wonder if they will even touch Inferno.

Dreadwind could still end up in either this line or a UW reboot. They might just be saving him to release as a 2 pack Buster/Hydra, or they could be using those 2 as limbs for Starscream (or whatever character they will use that torso for).

No, just no. They are brothers, but not twins. But more important than that, the Breakdown/Sunstreaker mold sucks. New line, I want new molds. So far, we have Inferno, Dreadwind and Blackwing that are based on CW molds. Dreadwind and Blackwing have enough changes to satisfy me. So, Inferno is the only one that I would consider just a lazy new head CW redeco. I really hope they keep it to only him, at least for the regular releases.

Oddly enough, I'm much more open to a lazy redeco of the new PotP molds. CW had their time, let those molds have their rest now, unless they go with a Dreadwind/Blackwing level of retooling.

Well the only really odd figure here is Jazz. The Lack of Voyagers and other deluxes still gives me hope Takara has plans for a UW styled Dinobot set, and a Starscream set (which will incorporate Deadwind & Blackwing somehow)...If Jazz is indeed to be a solo act however, I guess I can just go ahead and get the Hasbro one.

I have one real problem with grimlock, overall. I'm baffled by the choice to put the combiner sockets on the outside of the tail/robot feet, instead of putting them on the inside, where they could be hidden by the tail tip in dino mode and on the inside of the legs instead of jutting out prominently in robot mode.

Well, it turns out that the Prime Masters differ in engineering from the Titan Masters in that they got a pin rather than a screw. Goddamn it! This may end up completely ruining my custom plans unless someone more experience than me can explain how to remove a pin. Because if that emblem part of the Prime Master can't be replaced I may end up having to use a Titan Master that doesn't match the robot mode of the Pretender character. :BANG_HEAD:

Probably having one of my delusions again, but I'm thinking :TAKARATOMY: selling Jazz separately *may* be a good thing now, since he (in japan at least) he will have no connection to the Inferno Voyager. Maybe, they instead could release Guard City?

I mean...if you think about it, If they are contemplating a continuation of UW...You have:

Volcanicus
Starscream Combiner
Guard City
Abominus
Elita-1 Combiner
Battle Gaia
Predaking....

If they incorporate Guard City and even Battle Gaia into the mix, these are molds they already have at their disposal to pad things out while they manufacture new ones. This would just be awesome...but all we can do is wait and see.

By pin, do you mean a rivet (with kind of a flat head)?
Some were able to "fix" Kup's and Orion Pax's leg panels by heating the rivet head with a soldering iron until the panel was able to pull out. Swapped the panels, then heated the rivet again to secure it. If the prime masters are the same way, you should be able to heat the rivet and pull the maxtrix/face off the back and the pin out the front.

It may just work pretty well, especially if you want to use a TR face. It would depend on the hole size for the rivet versus the screw in the master's body. If you get lucky and things match up, then you should be able to screw the TM face on through the PM body and not have to use the rivet to secure it.

I'm not really an expert, hell, I'm a noob at customizing and all that engineering so see for yourself.

This may end up completely ruining my custom plans unless someone more experience than me can explain how to remove a pin. Because if that emblem part of the Prime Master can't be replaced I may end up having to use a Titan Master that doesn't match the robot mode of the Pretender character. :BANG_HEAD:

By pin, do you mean a rivet (with kind of a flat head)?

Oh man, that really, REALLY sucks.

I have to say, between the cheap-looking Dinobots and their horrendous combined mode, the appalling leader classes, the atrocity that is Starscream, and now the non-customizable Prime Masters, this line looks like it's going to be a disaster. The only things I'm looking forward to now are the Terrorcons and Moonracer.

So the Prime Masters are fucked when it come to removing their emblem back and replacing it with a 3dprinted face, huh? Guess I'll have to use the TM which came with the toy intended to become the body OR settle for them having non-faces. Either of those options.

Edit: In case anyone wonder, I got a spare Triggerhappy, Misfire and Quake to make into Bomb-Burst, Submarauder (once the wings are removed) and Skullgrin. My original intent was to unscrew the Prime Master's backback and replace it with a 3d printed face but Hasbro just had to be douche. One has to wonder if it isn't deliberate because they don't want people to make customs. Which, if you ask me, is nonsense because customs generally require you to buy spare figures to hack apart and repaint. Hence, more sales. But big companies are generally stupid. :-x

[Edit] No pics yet, tho... :(

Those prices are surprisingly reasonable. Makes me wonder just how different these are going to be compared to the Hasbro ones...

In this particular case, I'm guessing not very different at all

I agree. We could very well be seeing repeat of the Takara Trypticon syndrome where you are just paying for the same exact figure in a nicer box. The $65 leader class prices are especially suspect since Legends Overlord costs almost $100 on preorder. The good news is money saved. The bad news is we might not be getting the Leader figures in awesome shiny decos without the crappy grey plastic. I was planning to skip the Hasbro for those particulary. As far as the absence of the Dinobots in the preorders and the possible continuation of the unite warriors line, I would say pay close attention to Takaras deco for Slash. Whatever she gets is highly likely the other Dinobots will get. If she is chromed out, expect Diaclone Dinobots. G2 Dinobots might also be a possibility considering they are going G2 to release the Megatron mold.

Yes God forbid a company not want their products to be bastardized and mutilated. How dare they >:oP the more logical and less "Hur dur hasblow" answer is it's most likely cheaper or easier to manufacture that way.

Not everything is some anti fan conspiracy guys.

Why would Hasbro care if I buy a Prime Master and swap out the core panel (or just take it apart to repaint it)? A sale is a sale.

I'm no engineer but I'm pretty sure a rivet is more expensive and labour intensive than a screw.

I would not call that a 'conspiracy', for crying out loud. This is about on par with some videogame companies being against modding.

There is zero proof that this was a deliberate move against customizers. You're just making shit up to be mad about.
