I was really surprised when my local Target had all four of the Wave 4 Deluxe figures. I picked up Prowl and Mirage and left the other two. I went ahead and cancelled my BBTS pre-order while I was standing in the toy aisle.

Not for me - not yet anyway. If anything, CW Mirage will go in a separate IDW display.

I dunno CW Mirage looks pretty good with a shoulder cannon and no tiny little waist. Wonder if any of the shoulder cannons out could work on him.

I don't consider all Combiner wars a replacement for pre-existing things they are to different (and mostly inferior) for that there might be the odd exceptions like the Stunticons/AerialBots/Protectobots/Combaticons make more sense to use than Universe ones (where they exist).

But the 8 or So Autobot limbs no - To my mind that is like asking me if I want to replace Classics Hot Rodimus with Energon Rodimus.
I certainly don't want to replace Classics Rodimus with Mini-Me Rodimus. Beside next years Titan Wars line may potentially have a new Deluxe Rodimus anyway.

I don't consider all of them replacements for the classics versions that came before either. but I don't know that CW Mirage might look better. I love the old Mirage mold but I've always find it really skinny and that front end popping out of his back behind his head always seemed a little silly to me. I shall see when I have them in hand.

Oh also CW Trailbreaker looks more accurate than the Generations version which is obviously IDW so going to move him to the IDW shelf and CW trailbreaker to the classics shelf. That head sculpt looks awesome.

But no one said that Rodimus was an update to classics Rodimus. It isnt. Classics rodimus is an update to G1 rodimus and Legends Rodimus is an update to Micromaster Rodimus:

I think the Question was would you like to have the Combiner Wars toy replace the existing "CHUG" ones in your collection.

Rodimus is a good example of a case where you might not want to do that - Mirage (especially with the alternative Transformation and swapped hands) however may be.

Besides isn't Micromaster Rodmus/Hot Rod still Hotrod so what he's based on is sort of irrelevant to the original question.

He's perhaps just a small toy of a usually bigger Character like Optimus & Megatron are too. so come under the banner of "Just a bit of fun" like some might see One-Step changers.

Yeah but I find the whole question irrelevant too. I mean, why would these replace the other ones when they arent meant to. That's like asking "Is generations legends Optimus supposed to replace voyager classics Optimus?". Of course not, it's a different class and as for the deluxes, these have a combining gimick. Why would they replace the previous ones? Next year's trailbreaker would be really dumb to issue if there was any semblance of a goal to replace the one they had just released 2-3 yeas prior. These can be a modernized G1 representation for those who dont have these characters in this scale yet, but they arent meant to replace anyone that came before since they serve a completely new purpose.

GW Megatron though does seem to want to replace the Classics Nerf Gun Megatron, but even then that is a different size class.

These are just new play options featuring fan favourite characters.

There is certainly some arguments to be made for or against which toy you'd rather prioritise or buy now if you are new to Transformers.

For example if someone was new to the brand I might say yes by all means by all the Combiner Wars Autobots in almost all cases they work fine as who they are supposed to be and in some cases there is no clear way to say the new one is better or worse just different.

Example is Prowl I can see me liking him more than the Universe Prowl - as Universe Prowl is fiddly to transform (in the doors) and has that weird melted sticky paint issue on his doors he is however much batter articulated. But the new one is quick to change and has the bonus play feature as such I'd not be shy to recommend him over the Generations toy.

Another argument that can be made is the whole idea of would a collector/or child consumer like Dragstrip and Mirage to be different toys.

I still think Universe Hound is a better toy than CW Hound and I like the idea of that mould as Swindle better for the most part.

If you just wanted to be selective in your purchases based on trying to minimise repaints say then the Chug ones likely gain some extra appeal for that reason.

You have a choice to have a combining Mirage or a Combining Dragstrip or a Classics/Universe type non combining version of either.

That the Combiner Wars toy represent a unique play pattern and yet one that seems complementary to next years line too - seems to be that it might be a good idea to see 2015 as a start over point just like 2006 was before (and some might argue Generations was in some ways - especially the FOC/WFC stuff). Though Hasbro seems to be drawing on some prior products ideas too into 2016 like Scoop and Brainstorm.

I will be most curious to see what any potential the new Targetmasters look like small like the double ones or a bit bigger like Nightstick.
Or may be they may not do Targetmasters at all (I hope they do).

I do think it would be a shame if they stopped making CW Deluxes dead cold soon into 2016 - as I'm sure lots of people would have preferred to have the limbs for the Technobots completed. I myself wouldn't mind having a CW Sideswipe & Hoist either.

I would hope that Hasbro might consider releasing (potential new Mould) Takara Blast Off and Groove in Western form too.

IDK.... I'm looking at these repaints and none of them really look any better than the original 2.0 figures and since the combiner gimmick for this wave doesn't interest me, I'll likely pass on these. And wait for Wave 5.

Overall I'm getting kinda tired of these repaints so Hasbro will need to step their game up for the 2nd half of next year since I'm not all that impressed.

Yes indeed, and here is the interview that quote is from:

However, judging from their expression, I am 100% sure they meant that the second half of the year would feature new molds for another line (probably titan wars). Because the new molds seemed to indicate a big thing that is fully new coming our way.

Well, I've been collecting since I got grimlock in beast wars, but combiners are far and away my favorite aspect of the series. Before this, I would judiciously grab several figures over the course of the year that I liked; so once this line is over, it'll be back to a more conservative purchasing stance (and, really, most of the generation figures before this never really caught my interest for one reason or another)
Re: Video Review - Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Wave 4 Deluxes (1718869)

I think there is some issues unresolved in Combiner wars that leaves some people thinking even if the replacement line is great "Is that it"?

For example.
Surely there is enough mould to squeeze another 4 Autobots out of the moulds - Sideswipe & Hoist being the most obvious examples... that would at least be part of the way to giving Red Optimus some limbs.

Not to mention the lack of Technobot limbs and no Limbs for Cyclonus - the most obvious example of what to do there and a good money spinner is to make a limb capable Sweep/Scourge next year... people will army build that for sure.

But considering there is Decepticon repaint potential in the existing moulds and Takara's Grand Scourge lacks limbs too I would like to see some progression along that path as if you do address the Energon Optimus idea you actually address some of the Technobots and even the LeoKiser idea at the same time.

Not to mention it would be nice to have a Firetruck limb it could be siren, or Heatwave or Inferno or simply be named after an existing Minicon perhaps or even as a new character and careful design would allow for such a limb to be repainted/remoulded a bit too perhaps as Grapple or even a Decepticon Garbage truck character.

The drill tank idea has several uses, Brawl would remould well into something too. maybe even Quake.

I don't mind if they rotate the Combiner Wars concept away from mainline status but I would still like a few more even repaint/minor remoulds perhaps as gift sets and the like.

I bet I'm not the only one who'd want G2 Protectobots & Combaticons either on sale at some point (perhaps as a comic convention exclusive).

Hey guys, sorry this is off topic, but do you all think that CW Optimus Prime is a good definitive "G1 Representation" of the character for my collection. Is there a leader class Optimus from the generations line? I sort of want one that can be to scale with the CW Megatron. Thanks.

Not really, I think the best one is still classics O/P, and there are so many iterations of it, you could probably get one for a decent price.

Hey man. You just caught one of the biggest problem with CW Megs, he doesnt really scale with the "Classics line". And there is no "leader classics" optimus but instead there is the Masterpice Optimus which Takara advertises as the figure to go opposite him (as you can see in their ad below). Problem is that while that Optimus is a great toy for your collection, he is a tad pricey. This is the cheapest way to get him right now: http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=TOY-RBT-1535&page=top%2Fsearch%2Flist%3Fs_keywords%3Doptimus%24pagemax%3D40%24getcnt%3D0%24pagecnt%3D1

And no, I do not find the CW Prime to be a good alternative. He wasnt really meant to replace anyone, just give a fun option as a combining Optimus.

For a classics collection, the following below are still your best bet for an Optimus/Megs showdown on a shelf:

Well, it only makes sense. I mean CW blackjack is an update to G1 Blackjack (among other things) who is a micromaster.

Image

And that Micromaster has the same Transformation and scale as Micromaster Rodimus/Hotrod (they are practically reshells of one another). So why not have the same logic of Blackjack's update apply to Rodimus' update. I understanding you disliking it, but should I assume you also dislike the Blackjack update? Because both are pretty much the same to me (and seemingly to Hasbro). Like using the gen skids mold to make a crosscut update.

So I'm a complete newbie to this. I literally only started picking up figures a few weeks ago. I accidentally stumbled into Combiner Wars and simply couldn't resist. Now I'm pretty hooked and want to build out my collection, focusing on some of my favorite G1 characters. Out of curiosity, are there any other lines/specific figures that the vets on this board would consider essential to any G1 collection, especially ones that are still available at decent prices?

People keep making a big deal out of this; doesn't anybody realize there can be fun within this franchise, the rampant need to be 'G1' is quickly choking this franchise to death for many fans.

Hasbro is not saying that these are replacing anything, they are just doing this to have some fun, get some use out of the molds they made. Sure classics rodimus is in need of an 'update', but so are the BW crew (and much more so in that case), and so is everyone else;

I would browse the classics, universe 2.0, reveal the shield, and generations galleries and see what you like. There have been some definitive versions like classics Sunstreaker/Sideswipe, and reveal the shield Jazz. He might still be on shelves, but Springer is widely regarded as the best update made to date. Obviously Superion, Menasor, Bruticus, and skylynx are a must (if you're interested) Classics Prime and bumble bee, universe cyclonus and generations scourge. Since the classics seeker mold has been retired, we might be getting a new seeker mold, so I wouldn't go to hard on the seeker mold, but the henkei line did a good set of them.

A new collector who like Combining might enjoy transformers Energon - especially as people keep dumping their entire collections lately.

I personally still find the sweet spot for Transformers for me to be around the time of Transformers Cybertron (though I do appreciate that we eventually got some ankle tilts later on that is always nice to have).

I'm a terrible person to speak to about G1 I own some but I am terrible at getting around to filling gaps I just got a Yellow Cliffjumper only 30 years after his release. I don't even own a Shockwave or an Omega Supreme or Blaster or a Sharkticon Gnaw.
Every so often I will remember - hey I really should buy a Reissue Crosscut sometime - then I forget again.
I think I only ever opened one Reissue I bought and that was Twincast and only 1 Encore (some cassettes) I barely own any Masterpieces either. I only own three modern legends class toys, I often completely forget The Leaderclass Generations toys even exist & the only AOE toys I've got were a few Onesteps I got in a sale and a loose leader AOE Optimus of Ebay.

So I really am the very reverse of the sort of people whom are tightly G1 focused in term of original toys or the modern version of the characters.

I just like cool toys that do fun stuff... and to be honest sometimes I really would like to see a lot more new Characters. But these days my pennies tend to get spent on Third party releases over Hasbro ones.

But Combiner Wars (well the ones that actually combine) are cool toys that do fun stuff I guess.

go with mp's for accuracy and quality. go with cw for fun and playability and variety of play. mp's have pretty much made the classics irrelevant. as far as optimus goes. the cw is a good classic optimus. classics optimus is too small. of course mp-10 is better though. the mp's just blow away their classics counterparts. i don't know why people waste their time talking about classics sideswipe, prowl, iron hide, etc when there exists vastly superior mp versions. the cw versions are worth buying cause cw is just oodles of fun.

That is a a super useful set of links. Even for us old guys.

I have limited space in my shelves (At least until I finish remodeling) so I only leave one space for a character and put away the others. I do have a shelf(s) with multiples of Prime and Megatron though. I am looking for a toy that captures what I think about the character. Sometimes there are more than one version of that, other times I get to pick the best one. None of them I think are intended to be replaced as "the" version of the figure.

And CW prime is not the best but he's fun. I'd recommend the Classics Prime that came in the 2-pack with AoE Prime. Very good take IMO.

The Classics one scale better in vehicle mode and look more 21st Century, the fit better with the toys that do not yet have Masterpieces and they are the right size for most other Transformers - Mp cars have the old Headmaster problem of sometimes being a bit to big to fit with the toys that surrounded them.

Is Masterpiece Prowl better than Universe Prowl - well yeah of course he is - is he more fun - probably - but that is because Universe Prowl isn't very good - Personally I still quite like the Binaltech Prowl Or indeed even Alert who looks more like Prowl than Prowl does).

Alternators are not something to rule out as again a lot of people are dumping their collections and a bit like collecting Vectrex games or MASK toys it is for the most part an attainable goal.

Oh and another thing I don't own is an MP-10 of any kind.

if your the sort of person who just looks at their toys - and barely Transforms them then buy Masterpieces or 3rd part they are ideal.

If you like to fiddle with them while watching TV or pose them or use the vehicle modes then don't rule out the ones aimed at the kiddies as that may be what the kids do with them too - Combiner Wars are easy to Transform and that has a refreshing appeal if you feel burned out by Leader Sentinel Prime syndrome.

Maybe budget and scale? Also, if you wanted all your favourite autobots and decepticons and were stuck with only the MPs to choose from, you would have a small collection. I dont forsee a MP Swerve anytime soon (do you?) so to me it makes perfect sense that someone gets the Generations if they want a better version of that character.

i'm a big fan of the generations legends class. they are the right size and the quality is outstanding for the size.

Totally agree. Although that class was even better last year when they were the same price but came with a targetmaster.

If nobody has them yet I strongly recomend Blackjack and Cosmos. Though you could stay away from Tailgate and Windcharger.

Thanks for the help with Optimus advice. I like the look of the Classics Optimus but those forearms are pretty awful. I may get that one, but I know for certain I will have to get that Takara MP10. That is simply perfect. I may have to wait a while to put some money aside. I've been spending way too much money on Transformers

Also, welcome to the club nycPrime my fellow rookie! I went through that same thing a couple weeks ago, and kind of still am. The ones I like most that I have gotten over the past couple months are the 3 Classics Seekers. Awesome figures and jets.

Having the ultra magnus verison, I find that the door shields don't really obstruct anything, nor do they detract from his image of being o/p. Besides the transformation is too smart and fun to not get the figure.

Or a Megatron that isn't a tank/gun/Cybertronian air vehicle. That's why I loved the Alternity Megatron and Starscream and the FJ Cruiser X version of Prime.

I admit, cybertron and rid o/p are probably my favorite versions of his character, not only due to the combining feature, but also because they are unique from truck after truck, but at least armada, energon, cybertron were all distinctly unique despite being a truck and homaging G1

You'll want to get that Masterpiece Prime sooner than later. Last year at around this time he was going for around 400$ on e-bay easy. But now both the Hasbro and Takara versions have been rereleased at max half that. And while I do not think it is worth 200$ (because that is a lot of money), it will surely be more than that the longer you wait. Pretty much, if that toy interests you, focus on it.

As for Classics Optimus. If you want him new, your best bet is last years set: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?siteid=0&pub=5574891718&campid=5336631220&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FTransformers-Hasbro-AoE-Evolution-Optimus-Prime-Classics-Evasion-MISB-New-Movie-%2F161795723850%3Fhash%3Ditem25abc6d24a%26

And as a bonus you get Evasion mode Optimus in premium deco (he is a fantastic mold) and a great homage to G1 in terms of alt mode. Also, the deco on that classics optimus is the most G1 that toy has ever had.

Here he is compared to the original classics mold. The one in that evolution set (G1 deco) is on the right). Look at those beautiful clear windows and the chrome. Also, the clear plastic not being blue makes the forearms less obvious.

The Evolutions 2-Pack Classics Prime is great for G1 toy accuracy, but if what you're looking for is G1 cartoon character model accuracy, Cloud Optimus Prime is the best bet.

Fair warning though, since the cloud figures were exclusives in Japan, US retailers charge quite a markup http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TAK11788&mode=retail

True, but if you want to be one and done with a Classics version of perhaps THE most iconic character of the Transformers franchise, and G1 screen accuracy is your thing, a mark-up on a premium such as Cloud Optimus Prime is well worth it. Ebay is not a bad place to comparison shop on some of the "Cloud" releases, either. You can do a bit better than $100 USD, that's for sure.

P.S.: BBTS is charging only $80 for him right now? That's a damned good deal for online retail.

I had the Cloud version on preorder for a while, but when I saw the deco of the Evolutions one, I decided that's the Classics Optimus Prime for me. Just didn't like the white legs all that much - sure it's cartoon accurate, but looked "odd" in my mind. Plus I like the shiny chrome of the Evolutions version, much more like the original G1 toy.

Did it being half price plus with an extra figure have anything to do with the decision? ;)

they are just doing this to have some fun, get some use out of the molds they made.
I do agree with this. At the end of the day I'm sure this was just "Hey it'd be cool to make a little Hot Rod", not "Boy we should really do a super obscure Return of Convoy homage piece". What I intended in the quoted post was to say, hey, I don't like that logical connection because not everything has to be a nod to something else, but I won't reject the premise outright either ;)
